It’s not hatred it’s more like holding him to a standard. Shaq had to wait until, MJ aged out, he became the best center in the league, won an MVP, and won a ring, before he could be called “Superman”. Shaq’s whole attitude toward Dwight’s career is that it’s unfulfilled potential and halfway dominance. I love Dwight, but if you look at the quality of centers that came into the league in the early 2000s to mid 2010s, Dwight EASILY had the most talent, most athleticism and most strength. However, his “dominance” was really Dwight only “dominating” defensively from 2009-2013. He made 1 Finals, and got 3 DPOY. That’s not dominance, that’s Dikembe Mutombo, and last time I checked, nobody called Mutombo “Superman”; and that’s Shaq whole point. Even with the league as watered down at the center position, as it was from 2005-2014, Dwight only managed to become Dikembe Mutombo. And to Shaq’s point, that’s not cutting it to be called “Superman” against 80s/90s center. So, at the time, in 2009, when Kenny Smith blurted out that nickname for Dwight, I can definitely understand Shaq feeling like he was just watering down the term because a player put a cape on at a dunk contest.

I grew up watching Shaq in his prime between 95 (Orlando Magic) - 2002 (Lakers) and during that time, although he referred to him self as Superman, most of his fans called him Big Diesel or Man of Steel. If we’re going by the latter name “Man of Steel,” yes I get his gripe about feeling a way about Kenny referring to Dwight Howard as Superman and hyping that up, but to be honest no one calls Dwight Superman anymore.
