"Distressed" is the word I think you were looking for. These pieces are absolutely beautiful! It is amazing how cheap these are too make (material wise) versus paying hundreds each for similar quality furniture at a chain furniture stores. Plus these items will not fall apart over time as they are not made of MDF. Stunning!
@WoodshopDiaries Жыл бұрын
That’s the word, yes! Thank you! People tell me all the time how you can’t make anything decent from “cheaper” materials so I feel like many times that only makes me want to prove them wrong. It’s also much more accessible to average builders, so I like to show what you can do with it. I’m glad you enjoyed the project and I appreciate you watching 😊 happy new year!

Happy New Year!! Loved how this project came together, and they do match the dresser and bed. A thought that just occurred was to apply a base coat of black, then paint white, so that when you lightly scuff the front pieces the black shows through. (Yeah I know... you don't like painting. LOL) Also in this video it was good to see the project manager walk through, obviously inspecting your work. (grin) Until next time... Happy building.

The darker undercoat is an excellent idea. I debated doing that with a dark brown stain because it seemed like the dresser was like that. But I changed my mind because 1. I Really didn’t want to stain it because I was in a hurry 2. I asked my mom and she said she didn’t want the darker colors coming through. They did on the dresser and she felt it looked a little more busy than she really wanted. But, I’ve used that method in the past when whitewashing and it really gives an extra dimension that looks nice. The inspector’s name is Bubby and between him and shop dog Lucy, everything around here is thoroughly inspected and checked 😂

Hey! You’ve been missed, but I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! These are beautiful. What a wonderful gift for your parents. I will be making a set of these for my daughter. A side note: If you have ever found rodents in your dresser drawers, you would come to love not only backs but also bottoms to your pieces. We had a home with aluminum siding that was damaged in a storm. When the contractors came to repair it, it drove the mice that had taken up residence between the siding and the house into the house. I have no idea how they got in, but they did. Luckily, I have three cats that caught eight of them. The last one jumped out at me when I opened the drawer of a side table with no back. I lost 5 years of my life. ;D Backs and bottoms keep out dirt, many bugs, rodents and even pets such as small cats and ferrets.

Shara, I've already watched this video twice! I love how you spent some time to dress up a basic box into something that will be admired for many years to come. I always balk at the price of wood moldings but then remind myself how the moldings really dress up the job. This project is great because after the basic build one could add their own variation of moldings, carvings and drawer pulls to personalize or match their particular circumstance. Once again you've inspired me to get out in the shop and pick up on some projects in progress. Thanks for Sharing! P.S. In the few comments I've read viewers are talking about your hat. I looked for that hat on your website but couldn't find it. Maybe its just me but with at least two more monts of this weather I'm thinking that sure would be nice. Thanks for a great year in inspiration. Looking forward to all your new projects next year........and your Mothers!!!!!

I actually bought this hat just for myself and didn’t add it to the shop because I figured most people probably didn’t want “Woodshop Diaries” branded merch. They look fabulous! Could you talk a little more about your pet peeve with back panels on items with drawers? Is it that it just seems unnecessary?
@WoodshopDiaries Жыл бұрын
I’ve always had a pet peeve with dresser backs since before I was ever building dressers. If I ever had an issue with the drawer slide, it was difficult to access the inside (especially with small drawers) to adjust, replace, repair from only the front side. Also, in the past, I’d routinely overfill my drawers and my contents (socks were a common culprit) would get stuck between the back and the slides and not allow me to close the drawer fully. So I’d have to remove the drawer, remove whatever was stuck and reinstall the drawer. So I grew to hate backs on things with drawers well before I began building them. So now when I build them, I rarely add it. But some people think that’s insanity 🤷♀️ I can honestly say I’ve never built a dresser without a back panel and regretted not adding the pack panel haha. So to each their own, but that’s my reasoning 😅
@Roxanna.wez5671 Жыл бұрын

Happy new year! No, I didn’t have any concerns once assembled. I wouldn’t have had any concerns during assembly except that I wasn’t thinking and drilled the holes in the ends of the 1x3 too far apart. The 1x3s weren’t splitting…it was the 2x2s. The second one I built, I drilled them closer together (toward the center) and had zero issues. That said, Glue wouldn’t hurt. I just didn’t feel it would help anything.

December was crazy busy behind the scenes trying to wrap up end of year sponsorships, blog posts (I have a blog, woodshopdiaries.com that is my main gig) and paperwork and holidays in general. So I wasn’t able to build and edit videos like I’d hoped. End of year is always a little chaotic. Thanks for your patience!

Great video, thank you. Interesting I just left you a message on Community to enjoy your time off. And of course a video shows up on my notifications. LOL. Yeah, I don’t like that “distressed” look, much less painting the wood.

Haha I took several weeks off from posting. I was busy behind the scenes, but ghosted on here. Editing videos is just so time consuming. I couldn’t keep up. But I appreciate your patience and glad you were able to catch the latest video 😊 Also, I’m not a huge fan of distressed either but my mom loves it 🙈 I didn’t do a lot but I told my mom if she wanted more, she could borrow my sanding block 🤣

That's a great 'matchingish' design! I was just waiting for the "I hate painting" 🤣 Your Woodshop Diaries cap is cool and all, but please tell me Sock Monkey will still make some appearance?
@WoodshopDiaries Жыл бұрын
Don’t worry! Sock monkey hat is still around. I swapped these out one day and wasn’t paying attention. Sock monkey will be back in the next (or the next after that depending on the weather haha) video 😊 happy new year!

When cutting 2x2 are you using actual measurements?
@WoodshopDiaries Жыл бұрын
2x2 is a nominal dimension. The actual dimensions of a 2x2 is 1 1/2” x 1 1/2”.
@VoicesUnspokenMen Жыл бұрын
@@WoodshopDiaries thanks! I’m just starting out and that always confused me. I know from the stores to expect the measurements to be off by .5 but I didn’t know when we speak about all cuts we are meant to follow the same guidelines

11:27 I had to call my parents to see, we have an identical cat! 😂 Ours is female and is called Mel (Honey in Portuguese). What about yours? 😃
@WoodshopDiaries Жыл бұрын
Haha orange cats are the best cats! They have an extra dose of personality, I’m convinced. Mine is a male and his name is Bubby. But we call him all kinds of other things. He’s our farm kitty and is always good company (and entertainment). 😂

What is the reason that many people use pocket hole screws, and where does the name come from?

@@WoodshopDiaries Do you own a track saw?

No. I use a Kreg accucut and circular saw which is basically the same thing only more versatile.

You can just install the slides further forward so that the drawer fronts will be flush to the front of the dresser.
