I watched it with my mum. We're both big fans of the books. She was a nightmare 🤣 "That never happened in the books" "I always pictured him looking different" "Oh I don't remember that in the books" "But he hasn't met Barak yet" 🤦♂

I was like this too! It frustrated me how much they changed because the book was so good so they didn't need to change anything

Loved your review and sense of humor. I need to reread the entire series as I’ve forgotten so many details, but I enjoyed it-a few irksome things, but overall it was enjoyable. I’m looking forward to Dark Fire 🤞 When you mentioned not being bothered about the diversity, I thought to myself, “It certainly didn’t bother me, a Bridgerton fan. THEN I find you’re doing Bridgerton as well, so now I’m a subscriber!

🩸🩸 Great review! I agree with all your points! Hoping they'll get to make more so that they can fix some of these things!

I absolutely loved it. I watched it twice. Of course, I have not read the series.

🩸thanks for the thoughts! I also wasn't a fan of Jack killing Goodhap, but it did establish a reason for him to appreciate Matthew, as we see in the final scene. But of course it is interesting that Matthew was so determined to see Alice face justice but happy to cover up Jack's crime. But then he's also not all that disappointed that Alice has escaped, really; I think he's more disappointed that Jack didn't tell him about the secret passage. I thought they did a really good job of showing Matthew's change as he realises Cromwell's corruption, his increasing disillusionment. I felt that softened him more than anything. Overall I agree with you: at first, the changes they made caused me to wonder how they would bring it to a good ending, but by the end of the show it all fell into place and made sense. I hope they make more... And even better, my husband is now devouring the Shardlake books! Win - win!

I've never heard of CJ before this show. I absolutely loved the show, but I'm a huge fan of anything medieval England what disappointed me was, there wasn't more episodes.

Thank you Charlotte for your great review. I've watched Shardlake 3 times now and absolutely love it. I don't have the historical knowledge that you have so wasn't too bothered by the details. I did find the talking to himself odd though. Also found it odd that they kept reshowing the beheading. So glad to hear that CJ Sansom would have seen it though. I was gutted when I found out he had passed. . Thanks again 😊 Can't find a drop of blood emoji sorry x

I am reading Tombland by C J Sansom in it his friend Barak has a hook and Shardlake has a spinal defect.

I watched se 1. Why is Shardlakes right hand crippled? There are a number of things I didn't like about it. That was not true in the books. I'm going to watch the other 3 ep tonight. I wish a different company than Disney had made this, because Disney, of course, ruined the authenticity of the type of people that lived in Tudor England. So of the casting choices were just dumb as well as untrue.

I want to get into your mind whilst reading Shardlake: a Matthew Macfadyon & Mark Rylance combo sounds like my ideal man. For some reason, my mind ran more towards a younger Toby Jones. I liked Alice, and yes she'd make a great Tamsin. I would have liked to have seen more interraction between Matthew & Alice, such as where she tells him that he's too down on himself and has a fine face, etc. That's a strange bit to remember reading, but it made Alice a more complex character with her conflicting emotions between Mark & Matthew. In Matthew she probably saw a comfortable future but just didn't have other feelings towards him (she didn't fancy him). My favourite character in the books: Brother Guy, he's such an honourable and true character and in the books does stand out as being different which wasnt conveyed so much in the series. I have no problem with diversity in historical/period dramas (Heathcliff should always be a played by a person of colour, sorry Tom Hardy) but in this instance it downplays Guy of Malton's journey and the prejudice against him which also forges his and Matthew's frindship. Guy also uses his medical knowledge to help Shardlake manage his pain. I guess I'd have liked to have seen a more fleshed out Guy... Prior Gabriel's end should have been more nobel as it was in the books. I would have enjoyed his character arc from perceived as sinful, he was a peeping tom, but also had a caring side. Thank you, i really enjoyed your thoughts. Another video I started watching was unnecessarily critical so I appreciated your balance and love your well-read book. I'm going to re-read Dark Fire soon!

🩸enjoyed your comments on the series. I thought Shardlake was excellent especially Arthur Hughes. My only issue was the portrayal of Barack, I felt he was a bit too courtly and I always pictured him more as a rough diamond not so flamboyant, but it has been a long time since I read the book.
@CharlotteFurnessWriter5 ай бұрын
Yeah I know what you mean - he comes from very humble beginnings and so was not as flamboyant as you say. I wonder if they took a bit of Mark's arrogance and flashiness and incorporated into this season. Maybe we'll see a more sober Barak going forward.

If you like things to be authentic as i do, watch [The Witch, 2015] directed by Robert Eggers. All natural lighting is used, the clothes were made on hand looms, no forks are used when they have dinner. It pays close attention to the details of 1630 American colonists, even the house was hand made It is also a psychological, horror masterpiece.

Yet a black person in a prominent position at a remote monastery in Tudor England. Get real.

Overall I think it was better than I expected the choice of actor for Barack wasn’t to the book and the costumes were not in some cases to the Tudor period other than that 👍

🩸yes! I did love it but I had some bits that irked me. The third person talking - like you I was a bit confused over that. I didn’t like Scarnsea. It was great and atmospheric but not an abbey. Sean Bean was great as Cromwell. Also as I said over on insta I was jumping up and down like a nerd when I saw the blackwork embroidery on the shirts. I hope they go on to do the other books. I really do. Also: 😂 at Tom doing his diy jobs while you filmed.

So glad you loved it too :) I think most people agree with us that it's good but there's some bits that weren't great.

thanks for not explaining the ending. the sound quality wasn't crisp and the final dialogue about the Dr. Goodhap murder was a bit muffled so wanted to hear what you said but I guess it was more important to spend time on your pet peeves.
@CharlotteFurnessWriter5 ай бұрын
I do explain the audio quality in the video. I'm not a professional, I don't do this as a job - I work full-time and then do this when I can so I don't have a lot of time to edit audio etc. In terms of the ending, I am always very conscious that some people may not have seen the show yet - even if I say 'spoiler alert' and so I didn't want to discuss the ending too much. That being said I do appreciate that this is the culmination of the murder mystery so I maybe should have spoken more about the plot etc. I will bear this in mind for future videos.
