Fifty years ago, the fate of the Columbia Gorge seemed all but sealed to history. With residential, commercial, and industrial development proposals amassing in the early 1980s that would destroy the land and pollute the water, the Gorge avoided suburbanization and overdevelopment thanks to the efforts of citizen conservationists, including Friends of the Columbia Gorge founder Nancy Russell, to pass the National Scenic Area Act in 1986. Since then, Friends of the Columbia Gorge has been on the frontlines of the fight to stop incompatible development and preserve this place of singular yet fragile beauty-for our generation and all those to come.
If we are to ensure the Columbia Gorge remains a natural wonder in perpetuity, we must protect it while inspiring younger generations and new leaders to carry on this critical work in the years and decades ahead.
The time is now to permanently protect land, restore and expand habitat to strengthen climate resilience, build new trail networks to benefit Gorge communities, and offer new opportunities for all to be immersed in and inspired by the grandeur of the Gorge.
This is the vision of Share the Wonder.
