History
The Sharia Court of Appeal was established in 1960 as the Northern Regional Court of Appeal.
The 1979 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirmed the Sharia Court of Appeal.
The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria further confirmed the Sharia Court of Appeal.

The Sharia Court of Appeal is a superior court of record that reviews appeals from Area and Upper Area Courts.
The Sharia Court of Appeal reviews cases involving Sharia law, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Nigeria.
Controversy
The Sharia Court of Appeal is considered controversial because it interprets and reviews cases relating to Islamic law while also interpreting common and customary laws.
Some argue that the implementation of Sharia in the north violates the Nigerian Constitution.
