You’re right about covers catching your eye that you didn’t expect. I noticed it when I saw people share what they got. This and the awful mess on release day, made me realize that unless I really want a specific cover, it’s better to wait a few days before ordering. The shipping fees and exchange rate sucks, but it’s still cheaper for me to order from hobonichi directly.

I’m letting the enticing covers sit at the back of my mind a bit and enjoy watching the unboxings for now. I really don’t need another cover. It is calling out to me though 😂

The price increase made me decide not to order. The thing I wanted went up by $20, and with shipping and taxes... It's just too much

That increase is quite a lot. Maybe check the BST groups since I’ve been seeing people just selling 2025 items already.

DANG Tiffany, 0:04 - I felt that sigh deep inside. I ran the numbers on what I ordered at the release and what it is now. 14.8% increase in price. Mine says shipping soon as well. No shenanigans Hobonichi! 💜

Corrected their exchange rate error, not a genuine price increase (though it feels that way!) and painful all around 😣 When I look at new covers I ask myself, does it have the potential to become a favorite 🤔 And I have to 100% love the interior. TFS your collection ✨

This whole situation with hobonichi this year makes me so glad that I am not using one! It seems like such bad customer service and poor planning between the server crash and the price increases. I do think this will drive customers away to other planner options like Sterling Ink next year. I also have a lot of thoughts about perceived scarcity and consumerism in the planer community. I loved seeing your covers and hoped you got what you wanted without too big of a price increase!

I'm confused. Does the price increase affect customers who have already purchased their products during the initial launch? Are they recharging or adding the extra cost onto your card? Or did they raise their prices, and the price hike will only be applied to "new" costumers buying after the amended pricing?

It's only going to affect those who are ordering after the price hike. if you ordered before the price hike, the amount that was charged then is staying the same!

I too have been stuck on Shipping Soon. Today I got an email saying order will be shipped between sept 9-11 and I will get another email when it does. Crazy, but at least it's sort of different from shipping soon?

I didn’t want anything this year except for the blank notebook. So I just used Amazon for that. None of the drama!

Mine as well. Glad to have received an email from Hobonichi providing a shipping timeframe. I’m sure you may have received it too.

In the US, 99% of stores will honor the price that they display. Did they already charge people’s credit cards? They can’t just put that kind of increase on something that is already paid for…and that is their fault. They are going to have to honor the price shown. That’s bait and switch and fraudulent. I’m so glad this was my one and only year with this company, and I went to another for 2025. That and the insanity of the prices for the covers and their marketing strategy that encourages people to spend (and likely overspend in many instances) by creating a huge lead up, and creating an artificial shortage for supply vs demand in order to get people to buy up multiples of things because “I may never be able to have this and I have to get it now or it will sell out!!!!!!!” I really dislike that strategy, particularly when it’s done for a large majority of products (implied if nothing else. I couldn’t believe I actually saw someone unbox the nylon bag for 200+ dollars…I guess it’s some designer? I mean, the 3”x3” one was $170…it’s a little nylon bag. I’ll happily enjoy my Sterling Ink planners (A6 EDC and A5 desk) that are reasonably priced, and is a small, woman owned business.

I agree with what you are saying, but anything anyone already completed a purchase on is being honored at that price but anything after midnight EST (Sept 6th?) is when all the pricing increased.

Yes, agree it’s a toxic tactic for marketing. I’m not an expert on business strategies but in general, I’ve noticed it a lot with stationery things. I’ll have to make a separate video for that. But the above comment is correct, the new price won’t affect orders before the notice came out.

@@mollymollie6048 This year I believe I will be buying an A5 from Sterling Ink. I also ended up buying my weeks from Atlas stationers. I just am disappointed in the whole experience with Hobonichi and I originally was not upset about the server issue at launch but that coupled with the pricing just bothers me

@@toxmot I’ve seen it with other companies, too. With stationery, Archer and Olive sort of used that strategy…they were a small business, became very popular, and I don’t think they had the capital to risk on larger initial orders. They have in the past 4 months or so been able to do that much more (for example, if you weren’t a subscriber for the subscription box, they had ordered more so you could purchase one after release.) I’ve seen some of the popular sticker/washi independent designers do similar things. It’s not a strategy I like, and it does push people to overspend…and I like me some retail therapy, so I try to avoid getting caught up in those marketing traps because I’m really working on being less impulsive with spending and stick to a budget. In doing this, I’ve noticed more and more how those strategies are used to entice shoppers and thus avoid that. (I have my undergrad degree in Marketing/Advertising even tho that was never my career, and so I recognize those strategies and how they work psychologically with people.)
