For anyone new, the open alternative LICO-12 is not being updated much but do have a look at TIC-80. Free, open, and actively developed. Also with an active community, and with bunch of other languages than just Lua.

What I love the most in PICO-8 is the ability to make something drawn in a screen in a meter of seconds. Everything I need is there and runs smoothly. I can concentrate on the idea and design more. Second thing is the open source style of distributing. In each game I can look at the code, sprites, sounds. Analyze them and learn! Bonus points that it runs on the Pi :)

Got so interested in Pico 8 over 2 days. Found it on KZbin by accident. Will buy it in 2 weeks or so.

i'd like this but for 480v resolutions or at least 240v to max out the clockwise shell console and max the color.

get liko-12 or tic-80. As of the time I'm replying, tic-80 is further along in development.

I know that guy in the thumbnail.. He got banished when a student started a premeditated a media blitz to cancel him without even knowing who he was, and every last linux person fell in line and refused to defend him out of complete and total cowardice or sociopathy. What's his name again?....
