Shark Attacks our Giant Tuna

In this episode, I go fishing offshore with Carl from Slob City Fishing Charters using live bait to catch kingfish, sailfish, dolphin, and blackfin tuna. We used four kite baits and several flat-lined baits. Our first bite was a solid kingfish (estimated around 25-30lbs). Shortly after, we caught a dolphin (mahi-mahi), two smaller kingfish and a mutton snapper! While Carl was reeling in a kingfish, one of the flat lines started bending! Sailfish on! While I was fighting the sailfish, a hammerhead shark appeared out of nowhere and ate Carl's kite bait. Carl nearly got spooled by the hammerhead! As I was landing the sailfish, the hammerhead broke the line on Carl's reel. Later in the day, Carl hooked another hammerhead shark, but unfortunately, this shark broke the fishing line as well! At the end of the day, both Carl and I hooked two fish that we believed were tuna. I managed to catch mine before Carl; it turned out to be a bonito (false albacore). Carl got his fish to the boat; it was a giant blackfin tuna (over 30lbs)!! A sandbar shark attacked the blackfin tuna and nearly took half the fish! We worked all day to get that tuna bite, and at the end, the shark ended up taking half of the fish. We still had a great day on the water and caught a bunch of excellent fish!!

I've only ever been saltwater fishing a couple of times in my life, and only once on a boat. We were catching saltwater catfish, so nothing glamorous. I'm a river and lake and pond fisher born and bred. But I can relate in a way to the frustration. I've had big lunker bass swallow my bluegill whole and still not hook them. I've had big mud turtles and snapping turtles eat half my fish in one bite. And one smart aleck snapper clear my whole stringer by staying just out of sight and calmly eating my catch one by one. I pulled up a stringer full of heads and gills and nothing else. I tell you, if I coulda gotten ahold of that turtle I'd've pulled his head off with my bare hands, I was so mad. I lost a full days catch to that booger. But it made me a LOT more particular about where I put my stringers after that. I've had many a turtle try for my catch, but I've spotted them before they could do any damage since then. I'd love to be able to fish for these big fish like you guys do, but I've got too many health problems now, and I'd never survive the fight even if I managed the trip. So I just watch your videos and live the dream through you guys. My dream would be to see you catch those prehistoric groupers in person. I'd never manage to catch one, but I'd love to see one of those dinosaurs up close.
