The only sharks I have seen near shore at Destin have been Hammerheads chasing fish,usually stingrays.Hammerheads are fish eaters and only bite humans by mistake,usually in murky waters. On a very clearwater day, at Panama City Beach, I was snorkling with a friend .We were just floating at the surface watching as large schools of stingrays cruised along the bottom just past the second sandbar. Seemed like a migration, never saw so many stingray at once. They were at least 15 feet below us so we were in no danger. Suddenly a Great Hammerhead at least 12 to 14 feet long zoomed up out of the dark depths beyond the sandbar, directly below us. It began chasing down and eating stingrays, which had no chance at all of escape. You cannot believe how fast and agile those big Hammerheads can be. The water was crystal clear and we were clearly not fish, so we watched the big Hammerhead feasting for a few minutes as it was joined by a second Hammerhead about 9 or 10 feet long. They ignored us completely. As soon as one group of stingrays had been scattered another school appeared moving along the bottom. Then a Bull Shark about 6 feet long appeared below us, drawn by the commotion. This brought the show to an abrupt end,as a 6ft. Bull Shark will easily kill you. We slowly,carefully swam to shore.

Anyone who swims off the beaches in the panhandle should take the time to learn when sharks feed, how they protect their territory and such. As for me last time I went in the gulf, a huge fish rubbed against me, it was black or dark gray and massive. I saw its tail as he cruised by. Soon as i was thru peeing on myself, I calmly walked out and will never go in again.

I was in Destin summer of 2005. We were in the water about 15 yards off the beach. Water was calm about shoulders deep. We were chillin throwing a football around. Can't say I saw it...but I tell you for some reason I just didn't feel comfortable. I kept looking over both shoulders...mind you I've been in the water my whole life. Next thing I know a lifeguard on a quad comes flying down the beach whistling us outta the water immediately!!!! They spotted a 12 foot bullshark in the zone we were swimming in. I later found out that we were in the exact spot where a girl had been attacked and killed just a few weeks before we were there. Crazy shit. And to top that....our trip we were on...our next stop was New Orleans for 4 days. While we were there on our last day...we were experiencing the tropical storm attached to Katrina. As far as I know our 2pm flight that day back to NY was the last one the left before all flights being cancelled. Sometimes I think there really is somebody watching out for me. 🙏

why not just cut the wire a few feet from the mouth while the shark is still in the water? you don't have to put a gaff in the mouth or haul it up. lots of ways to harm yourself or the shark doing it this way. the metal leader left behind with the shark will rust away in short order.

These guys purchase fishing licenses which plays a huge role in shark conservation and a big reason why the shark population is so large. a lot of sharks are endangered species and im not entirely sure about shark legal sizes but when eating them exercise caution in frequency. Sharks in our oceans now have quite a lot of mercury in them which could cause brain damage if you ingest it too often.
