My Shark IQ was delivered today. I let it charge for a bit, but got impatient and started a cleaning cycle at around 60%. It ran for 48 mins, cleaned 4 of the 6 open rooms in my house, not including the hallway. It emptied its bin once during the process and went right back to the dock when it needed to charge. When I click on “map” in the side menu it says it’s still building a map of my house, but when I look at my history it shows a map of where it has cleaned today. I’ve not had any of the issues that you’ve had in your videos so far. Granted I’ve only ran it once. One of the first steps in the quick setup guide is to pick a permanent home for the base though. They even put it in bold. That could be one of you’re biggest problems with it. I suspect it can’t find the base because it has no clue where it’s at in the house anymore. It bumps into a wall that didn’t used to be there. It would be like blindfolding someone, letting them get accustomed to the layout of your house, then moving them while they sleep to another room. You would see them trying to find the door that used to be to the left, which isn’t there anymore. Just a thought. You can also delete the previous maps under settings - [robot name] - delete maps. It’s probably drawn your floorplan in several different ways on top of one another.

BINGO!!! this guys said it right. I also have the shark and it might be the budget of the three but it does quit well for its price. it took about 1 week to map my house (ran daily) and now it has no issues. App could be a bit better but for the $350 i paid its great.

That robot has a upper camera whichbis used to create a map... If any donkey is running behind the robot all the time like crazy and whining, robot has no chance to work properly... Come on... Leave the robot alone, he will do great work, without someone trying to cover his map input which is critical to navigate.. Ehh....that is a great robot for that price, you just need to know "how things work"....

Thanks for all the tests and footage; these videos have really helped showcase the different design decisions about how different companies think robovacs should behave. (Or at least for iRobot and Roborock, since Shark doesn't seem to have quite made it into the ring properly.) To answer your (perhaps rhetorical) question at 8:45 about the Roomba's behavior: the short version is, it's just going on a cleaning job. Observations & Ramble: It seems that Roborock has designed user command as top priority, and designed their robot to handle any commands given on a best effort basis. If you tell the S5 to do something, it will try it's darndest to fulfill that command, come hell or high water. This is shown in the sophisticated "find home" algorithm and the user ability to override jammed roller warnings. In contrast, the Roomba is designed to work a lot more like a tool, and perform as consistently and completely as possible. It is designed as a vacuum that also happens to be a robot, and will vacuum completely, or robot completely, but if it doesn't think it can do either, it will fail completely. In other words, it will only try to do things it's designed to and reasonably sure it can accomplish, do only those things as best it can, and throw in the towel in cases where it's not so sure. This is basically a form of "fail-fast" behavior, probably primarily aimed towards minimizing potential adverse consequences. When you found it stopped with a Lego it couldn't leggo, for instance, you mused that it must have found it under a couch, but the Roomba was not stopped anywhere near a couch. I'm willing to bet that you are correct about where it found the Lego, but that it then aggressively wrestled it across the floor (probably spitting it out and sucking it back up repeatedly) until it finally gave up. From a design perspective, the Roomba was trying hard to accomplish a task it had accepted, cleaning the room, but it finally gave up and shut down when the risk of damage to itself got too high. As a user, you received a message about jammed rollers, and upon examining the Roomba, found exactly that. On the other hand, when you plopped it on the floor in an unfamiliar location with a command to go home without a map, the Roomba immediately recognized that it was completely and utterly lost, but instead of wandering around looking for the base, (which it has no idea whether it could accomplish,) it switched to its standard cleaning pattern (which it most definitely could do). In the event that it found home, either via the short range proximity ward around the base or the alignment beam emitting from the front of the base, (since the normal method of recognizing its location was out due to lack of map,) it switches back to "going home", but, as in your other tests, if it cleans for a while and still can't find the base, it prefers to give up, return to its start point (where it's easy to find), and call for help. I can see why a lot of people might like the S5's best effort behavior, but I actually prefer the Roomba's more conservative take. Imagine, for example, if the S5 had been the one to encounter serious debris that jammed its roller. Having been given the remote order to press on with its task despite the roller error, it might have damaged itself or the debris irreparably, and the results could have been a lot worse than an aborted vacuuming job. In the unlikely event that said debris were a power or charger cord, for example, it might have been stripped and shorted out. Unlikely, but possible. Switching to navigation, the S5 uses its wandering behavior to find home, but what if its base were not in the area where it was left, or worse, it wandered somewhere completely unexpected and trapped itself or got lost and died? I've seen some amusing stories of people finding Roombas cleaning patios, garages and driveways due to house doors being left open. The Roombas in those cases were merrily vacuuming away, and presumably knew both where they were and how to get back in, (even if they were oblivious to the absurdity of vacuuming outdoors,) but what if they had blundered outside searching for their home base? A Roomba would give up after a while, go back to its start point, and bleat for help, but what would happen to an S5? Again, unlikely, but potentially catastrophic. On a tangentially related note, I remember you remarking that running the camera-based bots repeatedly to get map data was disruptive and tedious; have you been using the training runs on the Roomba?
@RobotMasters
@RobotMasters 4 жыл бұрын
HAst very interesting and I would agree that the Roborock puts user commands and App interaction as TOP priority, offering a Remote control, live Robot Tracking, on the fly setting changes aka power levels. All 3 robots that he has Roborock S5, Roomba I7 and Shark IQ use very different approaches to finding the home base if the robot doesn't know where home base is. Both Roomba and Roborock are capable of being physically moved and update their location if they have a map saved. The Roborock does this the best and most consistently. I don't know about the Shark IQ since I have yet to create a map 😫. The Roborock uses the most sophisticated approach where it spins 360 degrees, than moves forward a few feet and spins 360 degrees again. The robot is rebuilding the map if you watch the App and it also remembering where it has looked and will not check those areas. The Shark IQ uses a simple Left Hand rule algorithm which will follow the Left or Right Side of a wall until it finds it charger. The Roomba from what I can tell uses a Random bounce off the wall approach similar to the algorithm iRobot uses for their Bomb disposal robots to look for bombs. The Training runs on both the Shark IQ and Roombas require multiple cleaning runs, on the Roomba 3 -5 and I am at 19 cleaning Runs on the Shark, and still no Map. Now the LG CordZero R9 can create it's Map on one Cleaning run and it mainly rely on its camera for navigation despite having a foward facing laser system too. Well that my take on this robots.
@hadrast
@hadrast 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobotMasters When you say Roombas appear to use random bounce when they're searching for the base, which are you referring to? From what I've seen, ones like the i7 in the video don't move randomly at all, but use the standard back and forth cleaning pattern to clean a progressively larger contiguous zone as they look for the home base. You can see in this video starting at 5:11 that every time it bumps into something or stops and turns, it puts itself on another track parallel to it's previous paths, and around 9:08 you can see the standard parallel line pattern it's leaving in the rug as it goes.
@hadrast
@hadrast 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobotMasters Err, what? The Roomba in this video is lost after 5:11, but it's still using the back and forth pattern; you can see the lines in the rug at 9:08. Can you show where it's not running parallel?

I've got a Roborock, and it makes a complete map with one run. It needs virtually ZERO space on either side (mine's got 2 inches on one side, and 6 inches on the other), it doesn't get confused about new items or locations, doesn't need the lights to be on, and it has never failed me in any way. Having owned 5 robots from 5 manufacturers, I can safely say that this is the best by a wide margin. A good robot should be able to make a pinpoint map after one run, but then again, that's largely a function of laser navigation, instead of looking at the ceiling.

We just got the Shark IQ this weekend and haven't had any of these issues. It's mapping our house properly, docks correctly, and we have already noticed a difference in our floors after 1.5 days. Also, our battery runs for at least 2 hours when in eco mode (we have mainly hard floors, so this sufficiently cleans them- we put it in Normal for our 2 area rugs).

I’ve owned the Roomba since the second generation. I have the I seven in vacuums my house five days a week it always returns to its Homebase I have zero issues with it. The build quality on the roomba is much better than all other robots as well. It’s also user replaceable for any part that goes bad in it which is awesome. Even though I’ve never had anything break in mind quite amazed. It is the only vacuum cleaner to buy it also beats out on all carpets versus all other robots. I hate that all the other robot companies are copying iRobot they’re all an identical copy except not as good. When it comes to navigation I robot uses camera instead of lidar their house to be a reason why they choose to use Camera I realize lidar is a little more accurate but I don’t have any issues with mine my Roomba works great it gets around everything and threw an entire 1300 square-foot house every Day of its life and vacuumed the whole place I’ve been pretty impressed. Been using the I seven for 11 months with no problems. I know people mention about reusing the bags in the homebase you cannot reuse the bag. The bag acts as a filter was clogged it will not suck properly room to pop random error codes about clogged vacuum on homebase. You must replace the bag every month by generic bags they cost nothing it’s like 12 bags for $20 that’s enough for a year. I just thought I’d throw my two cents and I’m extremely knowledgeable when it comes to all of these robots I just don’t do reviews in my opinion everyone’s got a long ways to go to keep up with the roomba regardless of its flaws. I support I robot 100% they are the original robotic vacuum company I’m just tired of all these knock offs.

Yes I’m aware others get around better and that’s all right and I have had others for experimental purposes I still believe in I robot just not a fan of other companies stealing other companies designs I don’t think it’s right. Not saying all the robots don’t work OK I know they do but in my personal opinion I think roomba is the better robot just hands down regardless that others can get around better. There is no problems with it gets the place clean gets around the entire house with no problem can’t really see much negative. There’s always room for improvement on everything.Roomba hasReplaceable parts I think that’s one of the best parts of it. If you need a new brush motor you can take it out in 30 seconds need a new wheel take it out in 30 seconds pop new one in i I think that adds a lot to the roomba being a good robot because you can fix it if there’s a problem the parts are a dim a dozen on eBay all that adds up to me better usability don’t really need anybody’s help troubleshoot or fix it. Once again this is my personal opinion please don’t hate what I say what you feel about other products is perfectly fine this is just my belief.

I have the i7+ and do not have any of these problems that you have. The manual states to have 4-5 feet on both sides of dock. I have seen mine once in the past month take a few mins to figure out where docking station is. I had it upstairs cleaning 3 rooms. After it finished I brought it down stairs and placed it on ground. It did find its way home but it took 5 mins. The self cleaning is what sold me on this unit. Shark never came into the picture as I had a upright from years ago and it was so bad I dumped it in trash bin. I bought the Neato D5 as the place I bought it from did not have the i7+ in stock. I had to return the D-5 the next day as it just quit with no life at all. Left it in charger and by next day it was dead. Returned it for replacement only to find the store had the i7+ back in stock. I've had one problem with the maps on my iPhone. iRobot updated the app and it somehow nuked all my maps. I've read others saying the same thing. I have now backed up that app so if it happens again I can restore the maps. I live in a very dusty town surrounded by farming fields, etc. After having to clean the neato D-5 the first time I was mad on not waiting for the i7 but it turned out as it died. Another thing I like with the i7+ is the Hepa filter. Not smelling the dirt is another great thing to have. I've seen Is other's complain about the cost of filters and bags. Both can be bought on Amazon from 3rd party sellers. And They work as good as OEM. The rollers on the other hand are the worst. Stick with OEM on those. I think it all comes down to what works for you the buyer. Keep the videos coming. :)

I have the Shark IQ and had to learn a few things. If you except the map it will no longer build on it. I deleted the map and started fresh. The first time out it had it near perfect but had one room door closed. The second time it found the missing room and added it to the map. I still have not said the map looks good so it will make slight more adjustments to the map. Once you say it looks good that is your final map. As far as the robot not returning to the self empty base mine has never missed it. Mine did come with a SharkMat base that is required on carpet. I don't see that on yours. If it was hard floor where your Shark base is, this SharkMat is not needed. Also I selected Recharge and Resume and also Evacuate and Resume checked in my app. This is a must if you have hair from pets. It cleans for a while and returns to the base and self empties the bin, then returns where it left off. By default the vacuum is set to medium vacuuming power. Again if you have hair from pets set it to high. Delete your map and set the app up with these features. Let it map your home. Then view the map in the app BUT say something doesn't look right or the map will finalize. Let it run two or three full cleaning cycles the map should be perfect. Then you can say it looks good and then you can add no go zones and define rooms. Hope this helps you and others.

A clean base would be better. Let's hope RR comes out with one of those soon. Amazon rates RR higher than any other robot I've seen, so apparently, the Amazon reviews are accurate.

It wasn’t able to finesh so it doesn’t have a map so it doesn’t know where it’s base is until it gets close I bet if it has a map you can start it in the corner and tell it to go home and it would do it, granted I don’t own one yet but I’ve seen enough videos on it Edit: wait omg what if this happened, the roborock found the LEGO said it’s stuck and you told it to keep going anyway, then it spit out the LEGO for the roomba to suck up and then say it’s stuck which would explain why they got stuck the same day

I think after it maps it knows what’s what. But then if you have 2 and it’s headed home on a straight path and bumps into the other one. It will start to second guess it’s true path. And go about re-mapping to get around the new object in its way. All while knowing it only has so long before it’s battery dies. But you made the error introducing a new moving object and it’s not designed for that. It will always through a wrench into the original map it has created.

Roomba not a fair chance sucking up a kids toy and not breaking I thought it did ok you set it down in a different spot and still made home. The shark was bad no code and just a confused look lol maybe it was too dark couldn't see so just sat idle until it died. Roborock seemed solid but I'd like to see more vs the roomba because I really like the bigger cleaning bin

10:53 It thinks it's done because you told it to go home after removing the Lego infiltrator, which cancels any active jobs. I think (not 100% sure) that errors only ever pause cleaning jobs, so if you had hit the Clean button instead of the Home button it might have gone back to its original job (after a bit of looking around to get its bearings).

After the robot became stuck and he moved it, the robot became delocalized. Meaning it probably started creating it's own map. Yes, the robot has this capability. Second, the IR signal only extends out to 6ft from the base. Pretty sure the signal doesn't emit from 360 degrees. More like a small wedge I think. Once the robot receives the IR signal, it will dock. It's going to bounce around to try and find the signal to the base until then. If the robot isn't delocalized, it will easily know it's location based on the camera it uses. If it seems lost you need to return it to the base and delete the additional map it's trying to create.
@hadrast
@hadrast 4 жыл бұрын
@@Slick1020 Since it wasn't replaced in the same location and orientation, it definitely got lost or delocalized, as you put it. However, if the old cleaning job was resumed rather than cancelled, the Roomba will retain the old map data it had, even while it starts building a new map. It will start comparing what it currently sees against the old map data, and if at any point it recognizes its current location on the old map, it will use that to orient and merge the old and new maps into one. You can tell this has happened when the Roomba interrupts its cleaning/search pattern and navigates directly to a location that could only have come from the old map data, and resumes the old cleaning job. In the event that the Roomba fails to find any recognizable landmarks (such as the base), it will not attempt to merge the new map data with anything, so worrying about clearing the map data manually is unnecessary. Keep in mind that in this context, the Roomba did not yet have a permanent Imprint map available for the area, because not enough runs had been completed since the base was last moved, so all the maps in this discussion are local to the current job only. The signal from the base has two parts. There is in fact a narrow alignment beam out the front as you described, but there is also a short (1ft or less) circular proximity ward as well. This is necessary to prevent the Roomba from bumping and dislodging the dock from the sides or back.

@@hadrast I have an S9+ and once it's delocalized you cannot resume the job it was performing. If delocalized, you do need to delete the new map it is attempting to create. Otherwise, you will have a partial map that isn't useful unless you allow the robot to finish the job. You can always recall previous map if you want.
@hadrast
@hadrast 4 жыл бұрын
@@Slick1020 That's strange, because I know from experience that even the good old 900 series is capable of reacquiring its location and merging map data for the current job, even after being moved while paused. Here's an example of what that behavior looks like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn2UaoymqJeGncU

@@hadrast If the robot becomes stuck and it is moved it will trigger delocalization. If you just move my S9+ around, it will use the camera to identify it's location. The S9 can look around at features in the room and determine it's location by matching what it finds in the room.

Roomba makes the best robot vacuums. I'd take a Roomba i7 series over a shark IQ anyday because of better navigation, battery life, battery recharge time, and cleaning performance. Also, the Roomba Clean base also has a much better sounding suction motor than the Shark IQ's version of the clean base because it's a tad lower pitch, futuristic soft start sequence, and a little quieter. The Roborock has amazing navigation but, does not clean as well as the roomba. Shark robot vacuums don't have as good of a navigation and don't deep clean as well as both of the roomba. My favorite robot vacuum is a the Roomba S9+.

This is 100% user error on your part. Which is why I see so many Roomba complaints. People don't understand the technology. After the robot becomes stuck and you move it, more than likely you delocalized the robot. Meaning it probably started creating it's own map after you delocalized it. Second, the IR signal only extends out to 6ft from the base. Pretty sure the signal doesn't emit from 360 degrees. More like a small cone in my opinion. Once the robot receives the IR signal, it will dock. It's going to bounce around the house to try and find the IR signal from the base. If the robot isn't delocalized, it will easily know it's location based on the camera it uses. It can look around your house and figure out it's location if the robot hasn't been delocalized. If it seems lost because it was delocalized, you need to return it to the base and delete the additional map it's trying to create. That will resolve everything. I think delocalization is smart. This allows the robot to finish cleanings and return home. If I were you, I would stop telling people to buy a Roborock. There is a reason they aren't sold at Best Buy. Last thing you want is a Chinese robot connected to your home WiFi. They are well known for placing spyware in laptops and phones. This isn't some Google, Apple, or Samsung phone where they control the software and manufacturering process. So you are giving the Chinese access to your phone, home WiFi, and who knows what else. Brilliant. You think any US agencies checks the software on that Roborock? Who cyber attacks the US most..China. A guy on Amazon said after they used the app, his girlfriend information was hacked. Willing to bet the culprit was in China. But do you bro.
