white sharks are primarily ambush hunters. that's why there are so heavily countershaded. they tend to hang out near the bottom, where their dark dorsal coloration hides them from being seen easily by seals on the surface. then they rush up to grab whatever takes their fancy. point being, they are entirely relying on their sense of sight here, not smell. most attacks on surfers are by curious juveniles that haven't yet properly honed their hunting skills. Hell, most juveniles (1-4 years old or so) are still mostly eating fish.

Although I’ve never heard about fins growing back I did hear about some sharks being able to swim normally after (only) the backfin was removed, is that false too?

Heres a shark fact. Sharks are notoriously terrible at TTT, while they are a common sight in that environment they are relatively harmless and will run away without returning fire if taken by surprise. (A generally ineffective strategy given their large hitbox) Also if you are partnered with a shark, do not revive them when they are dead as they will somply die again almost instantly and complain about the lack of available firearms

I had a slightly surreal interaction with a shark about 20 years ago: I was swimming with my brothers near the family boat in Thompson bay (Rottnest, Western Australia). We'd only just got back onboard for lunch, when the biggest shark I've ever seen came swimming up. It was a huge, beautifully striped Tiger Shark (& which I now suspect to be a mature female) that was so enormous that you could see it's head & tail simultaneously as it went under the boat (an 8 metre / 28 foot cabin cruiser, with a 3 metre /10 foot beam). I'd estimate the shark to be at least 6 metres / 20 foot long & was astonished to see it in such human crowded (& therefore "safe") waters. It came in to the bay in a long leisurely curve that let it have a good look 'round, before swimming off for deeper waters. ~ ~ ~ When I was actually snorkeling/diving, I was far less concerned with sharks than with giant Stingrays (2-3 metres across). A couple of times they'd get curious & come in above where I was swimming, blocking me from rising. You'd be diving deep & enjoying looking at all the fascinating sealife, before everything would suddenly go pitch dark as the 2 metre ray blocked out the sunlight. I was also pretty terrified (thalassophobic) at the thought of being stuck with the ray's "sting" (actually more like a nasty multi-barbed spear made of bone). It's the smaller species of stingrays which tend to give & electric shocks), as I knew a diver who'd had a stingray spear him right through his calf muscle. He'd been dragged along with the 'Ray for a while, before he was able to cut himself loose with his dive knife. The wound ended up becoming badly septic (likely due to the Stingray's venom) - seriously infected enough to need a good chunk of the muscle removed (in several surgeries) - leaving a big "dent" & a revolting looking scar. He was lucky that he was diving with scuba & had an air tank (& plenty of O₂), I was a free diver, who had about 2 minutes before I needed to surface & breathe - so the same experience would have had a profoundly different outcome for me.

20ft would be absurdly large for a tiger shark. 14-17ft females are relatively common, but 20ft?

@@bkjeong4302 It's a guess based on the beam of the boat (3 metres) & my perspective, so it could be a bit off, but this was a seriously huge shark + the utterly surreal sensation of "I was just in that water" & "This is Thompson Bay!" (There are hundreds of boat moorings in Thompson Bay & it's relatively shallow (6-10 metres), so it's always pretty crowded with boats & people, and considered very safe.) It was like seeing a full-grown Bengal Tiger calmly wandering through your local mall.

There should be a ban on shark fishing especially just for the fins, what a disgusting waste and torture of a beautiful creature

Another thing about dolphins and porpoises around means no shark is that some species of sharks eat dolphins and porpoises. So another misconception all sharks being afraid of dolphins. It is true smaller shark species avoid dolphins and pods may also scare large sharks but dolphins around doesn’t mean the waters are clear
@bkjeong43024 жыл бұрын
Hell even sharks similar in size to dolphins will commonly associate with dolphins, either to hunt alongside them or (in some species) to eat them.

Glad they are mostly just curious. I don't think sharks would enjoy feeding on us anyway, very bony, heavy-land bones, bone to meat and fat ratio inconsistent, usually has non-edible things with it and/or is covered by them. So that's good. Because I am convinced they are smart and capable enough to feed on people they meet if they liked it.

Didn't realize that some people actually think that shark fins grow back. Christ, I genuinely think if I had the choice to save the great white or mankind, I'd choose the shark. Gotta protect the higher intelligence

A lot of shark "attacks" are also just curious sharks and they use their teeth to inspect. Kinda like a dog sniffing or licking you, unfortunately sharks have big teeth and so a curious encounter with a shark might lead to serious injury for a human
