That's a baby! I myself have hooked multiple Bull sharks in lake Ponchatrain! They travel up into the Spillway and we all know that they travel up the Mississippi river! The lake also has Hammerhead sharks at a certain time of the year when the lake's salt content is high! My biggest bull in the lake was 9 and a half feet! A guy fishing in a boat close to me around the railroad trestle hooked and released a 11 foot hammerhead! What's crazy about Lake Ponchatrain is you can catch red fish drum trout and I've even seen yellow fin tuna but all around the edges of the lake especially the bayou's and canals that run into the lake have large mouth bass and goggle eye perch! One of the best fishing spots in Louisiana!
@charliemike133 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! That’s fascinating-so I would assume that the hammerheads are also there having babies? Also, I take it, probably shouldn’t swim in that lake! A 9’ bull shark will tear you up and that’s no lie! Would be cool to see though. I wonder which kind of hammerhead or if it’s multiple species of them? Anyway, stay safe and have some fun fishing! Catch one for me!
@williamoleschoolarendt70163 жыл бұрын
@@charliemike13 bonnet head hammerhead which is the smallest and the big big 10 and 12 footers have been spotted! They usually hunt flounder and Ray's in the shallows! My friend has a Lafette skiff trawl boat and he has 18 foot wing nets and he picked up a 11 foot hammerhead! So Lake Ponchatrain has plenty of sharks what's crazy is there aren't many attacks! I can only remember a few off the top of my head! I know that a 12 year old boy was swimming off of the steps that walk out into the water and he was bit by a 5 to 6 foot bull shark! There are a lot of fresh water bayou's and small rivers that lead into Lake Ponchatrain and bull sharks have been sighted in those bayou's and rivers! They are definitely In there dropping off babies! Peace out bro!

@william ole school. I would guess the tuna you saw in the lake were big jacks. Which people call here a lake pontchatrain tuna. They resemble tuna and the lake is full of them from mid summer to early fall. Tuna are a pelagic fish and can’t tolerate brackish water like a jack or any other species of saltwater fish that’s in the lake. In late summer when the lake usually has the highest salinity, the salinity level only gets as high as 10 ppt. Tuna need to be in sea water where the levels are 20/25+ ppt

This is not uncommon in Pontchartrain and maurepas. Both of those lakes are connected to the gulf and sharks, redfish and speckled trout live in the lake pretty much all year. The spoonbill paddlefish also use this lake every few years during their spawning migration. The lake is a melting pot for both fresh and saltwater fish because of its fluctuating salinity levels.
