Sharla, thank you for vlogging you ordering food! It's not necessarily the most riveting part of your videos lol, but it's really handy for people trying to learn Japanese or wanting to travel to Japan!! I am going to Japan in a few months, I do know a little Japanese but am not very confident at speaking, and I am nervous about ordering food in Japan and just speaking to staff and native speakers in general! So watching this and seeing how you order and stuff is really helpful!! Thank you, luv ya vids xxx

Reminds me of when I was in Japan my first time and didn't speak any Japanese. I went to order a parfait by myself, and when the waiter was actually asking "is that all?" I imagined he was saying "anything else?" so I said no, then I answered yes/no alternating as he was alternating what he was asking, and we were both confused hahaha.

That soda thoooo. I wish America would do special soda flavors like they do in Japan. I mean, we come up with the weirdest potato chip flavors lol. How hard would it be to market a Halloween or Christmas soda? Lol. As an Aussie with limited access to foreign snacks, that information made me weep. And slightly confused, because I used to get monthly snack boxes from Japan Crate until they became super disappointing in their choices. Although they're based in the U.S., so maybe it's a trade agreement thing?

The reason that we are so strict with food being brought to Australia is because there's a lot of diseases and pests we don't have here and they could devastate our agriculture industry, and being an island it's a bit easier to keep them out. It's even worse in Tasmania! There's a lot of things you can't take from mainland Australia to Tasmania just in case.

Yeah Australia is very strict we are also a rabies free country and we have a delicate ecosystem. We found foreign seeds and foods unless grown in Australia can cause plants to become diseased. With Australian Flora and Fauna affected radically in the past 200+ years from european settlement. We're trying to preserve and repair.

Hi Sharla! I’m from Australia and unfortunately we do have really strict food rules, especially when it comes to dried fish and meats. I think this has a lot to do with certain parasites and such that can be carried through foods that don’t exist in Australia! However I have travelled to Japan and brought home SOOO much Japanese candy. Perhaps you can bring it into the country if you are physically there to declare it, it’s fine. I don’t know how much this would have helped, but that’s from my experience! :) loving vlogmas, I really don’t want it to end 😫❤️

We used to send snacks and stuff to my aunt all the time when she lived in Australia, she said that as long as it is a "factory-sealed" package it is no problem (with few exeptions, like meat and similar things that can contain pests and diseases) because that is what customs had told her. We sent loads of candy and potatochips for years and all of it arrived, sometimes it had been opened and checked by customs but everthing had been ok. We did sent it from Europe though, mabye it's different from Asia.

I live in Australia and my Japanese friend sent me some things for Christmas! In the box there was those candy things that you mix with water and make them, idk haven't done it yet, and he just wrote "candy" on the outside of the box and it was all okay? It could just be the type of food you were trying to send, but I think sealed candy should be absolutely fine!!

Hey Sharla! I live in Australia and I buy snacks online from Japan all the time and have no issues with customs. I don't think you would have a problem either. I even brought some home on the plain when I last visited and it was fine. I'm sure your friend will love her gift regardless. I really want to try one of those pubic hair brushes hahahaha. Love your work Sharla Xo Kobi

that's so strange that they wouldn't let you send any of the food to Australia? I know that sending raw food & anything that could possibly contain bugs is usually prohibited, but I would've thought things like packaged snacks & stuff would be fine 🤔 My friend sent me a snack package from Slovakia which managed to get to me in Aus safely Anyway thanks for all your hard work during vlogmas, so sad that it's almost over 😭

Courtney S since Australia is an island we got very strick conditions, either it needs to be approved already or be pre approved. Even from Tasmania to the main land is restricted. Someone bought over frogs and basically fucked up the eco system.

Jackie Elizabeth Yeah I know we're super strict about foods coming here (I'm from Tassie), but I assumed Sharla would've just been sending things like packaged lollies which I thought would've been safe, but hey maybe not

Maybe the rules are changed now? Few years ago I sent my friend in Australia some snacks too and she only warned me how banana (?😂 can't really remember) or something is definitely a big no 😂 also how the value of the package has to be below certain limit for her to avoid the customs.

I agree with you, Courtney. I'm Australian, living in Australia, and I get heaps of food packages from European friends containing packaged snacks and spreads (gingerbread spread FTW!) I'm pretty sure that most packaged foods are fine, because they're made for import. It's only fresh foods that may contain harmful bacteria, such as onigiri or fresh vegetables and raw meat and bread that they don't allow. When I came back from Japan to Australia last year customs were heavily analyzing the foods that I brought back, back when I came back from America this year they didn't care about what I brought in (fresh cajun spices were allowed!), so perhaps Japan has problem foods? Or perhaps there are too many people trying to smuggle in Kobe beef?

If it’s confectionary that’s sealed you can send it Sharla! So anything made through big factories are okay! Just don’t send anything traditional or home made so to say... My boyfriend gets canned foods and pasta sent to him from France all the time and never has any problem!

We have really strict biosecurity laws in Australia because it’s an island and we’re isolated from the other pests and diseases other countries may have that could damage the plants, sea and livestock. However when you fly over customs will generally let you through with packaged sweets and snacks so I’m shocked the post wouldn’t accept them.

Sharmander - what are those leg things you were talking about called? You said that they help relax the muscles in our legs, right? I'd love to get the name, and possibly a photo of the packaging, so that my friend in Japan can pick me up a box to try. I've been using those heating pads that you stick to your back or clothing to help with back pain and they've been a godsend, especially at work! I'm so thankful that she can mail them to me. Now I'm just looking for something for my leg pain and the ones you mentioned may be what I'm looking for! Any help is greatly appreciated :) Thanks! Merry Christmas!!

hiya i live in australia :) since Australia is an island nation out on its own we have SUCH strict controls in place to ensure that anything harmful (pests and diseases) does not come into our country and damage our eco-system because the only way in is through the borders. Be careful sending makeup Sharla x P.S ALSO If you've never seen one check out Quokkas - they are SOO CUTE :)
