This is deeply about Mildred and her past which was so abusive. She never had anyone model humanity in a way that kept her safe either. Only when Gwen comes along does she begin to see a way out of her own personal survival struggle and dare I say hell. She works hard to trust another. Her fear is paralyzing. There is a literal life and death struggle in both of them. Also the laws of the day kept those who were in the system and orphans divided as they were not allowed into studies nor could they hold any government jobs and that included nursing in regular hospital settings. They were not considered to be of moral character to hold such positions. We know Gwen is legitimate as they did back ground checks on all employees. Also if u were found to have any blood like native or negro u also could not be hired or attend certain upper level studies. When I was born in an orphanage there was still the law in the late 50s that u did not have to take any child of impure blood line. It was why many children who might pass white were lied to on adoption forms. This for me turned out to be a huge mistake as when doing operations on children and even adults if u give the wrong medication for native people or of that heritage u can kill them. I nearly died as a result. There were no counselors of the day to help people over come abuse as there is today. Even then children can grow into adulthood with deep scars that cannot be removed. It effects their entire life. It certainly is not even close to enough time to even begin to heal these deep wounds while with Gwen. She still has night terrors. Those will remain for a long time even in a healing situation. Take it from someone who lived it...in more ways than one. Not everyone should be allowed to adopt. I certainly understand the many complexities that can arise for one in these circumstances. Mental abuse can also be even worse when mixed with the physical abuse situation. And this abuse is covert. The abuser is usually very careful to hide their actions from others. My adopted younger sister was not easily controlled by mother and acted out. I was introvert and was terrified of her so easier to control. My sister at 7 was sent to a mental institution for correction. Later I was to discover that she had been abused there and raped by her doctor. I was left at home to deal with being threatened to be sent there as well if I did not behave. Can we talk night mares here?? Today one can learn to deal in a higher level and be far more compassionate toward others who suffer. It is one of the things I take deeply to heart and why I always firmly stand for their rights. But that also takes a great deal of determination and sheer will power in order to change what was drilled in. No pun intended. Mildred is a deeply hurting person who happens to be very smart. A natural student who in the right setting would have been a doctor and not a nurse and probably a surgeon. Today she would be a very meticulous Dr. not unlike the real brilliant Dr Asher of the Surgeons Cut on Netflix now. She is quoted as saying.."You have to have fearlessness tempered with the fear of failure". Sounds like Mildred..yes!? I rest my case. :) I can also say that I know Christine Crawford told truth in her book. Mine did many of the very same things. Even in using a hanger. She would grab anything at hand to hit you with. It was the moment for me to know that it was not normal to treat children in that way. But mother did not come from an abused past. That made her even more dangerouse as she used her beauty to control people around her. . But as she often said I was not blood and therefore I did not count. A cruel tongue cuts deeper than a whip. She kept hers until her death in 2018 at 102. I was her main care giver and legal guardian for over 10 years. I did everything I could to make sure she was safe and well attended and moved her to the town I work in. I have never wanted to face God with any other thing than doing my best for a human being that was lost in her own driven causes. I have paid a very high price in my journey here. Yet there are never any guarantees. All you can do is your best with what you know and have at your disposal in the moment. It is all there is for any of us who's only desire is to be loved for who we are...scars and all. That is not always possible and I understand that part of the equation as well. Time is finite and we only have so much if it. I hope this some how lends to a deeper understanding of this fictional character who is but the shadows of realities in living colour. It is not an easy thing to put out here. If anyone interviewed here has anything they may want to know I am on fb. and can talk/write privately if you wish. There r so many levels here that I have included only the undercurrents. Thank you for your time in reading this. Blessings. V
