Almost every Md sharp that displays the Toc error is because of the splitted/broken NGERH0597AFZZ J AC Wheel,Drive (worm gear). I replaced it in 4 models and now thery work fine.

Good to see you try to repair the Sharp Minidisc , there so iconic and a great portable device i had the Sony MD Walkman - MZ-R900 still boxed with some spare discs that i ened up selling on ebay last year as i never really used it , but another interesting vlog shame the cog was not fixable Lee 👍

Thanks. I did find some cogs on Reddit, a guy said he was selling them but wanted about £25 for one cog with postage. Impossible to find them anywhere but I'll keep looking. I don't want to pay that much in case the laser has gone to as it didn't look very strong in the video.

Mate, the problem is there’s a little gear inside the mini disc that is broken. This is why you’re getting thetoc error The game needs to be replaced. It happens to all the sharp models. What happened is the gear expense and splits

I also have a Sharp MD player/Recorder that has the TOC error. Would love to get it repaired. Bought it when I was a teenager many years ago. Would be interested to see if mine is repairable.

I believe most of these errors are caused by that cog splitting. If I ever find somewhere that sells the cogs I will post it here.

Compared to Sony, Sharp minidisc players have terrible reliability. I always assumed the lasers were sub-standard, but maybe it's broken cogs. Either way, I avoid them. BTW, I don't think I've ever fixed a minidisc player by cleaning the lens.

To be fair I found them to be perfectly decent during their service life but it definitely does seem to be the case that they don't take bring left in storage very well... Apart from the Sony ones they all seem to fail over time - JVC, Sharp, Panasonic and Orion are all the same. The ones that do last, including Kenwood and Denon, are just Sony mechs inside anyway.

@@jasejj Hi. I didn't know they are Sony mechs. I've had good experience with Panasonics, but they do like a fully charged battery.

I've never fixed a laser by cleaning it either but you have to give it a try. It has however fixed a laser that was skipping on tracks.

I repaired the gear and it is working fine. This gear in this video is already dented, that does not work, it is very tiny stuff.

The "Disc In" switch may be dirty. Which is probably why the disc is not rotating. This may be the reason for the TOC Error as well. I know Sony minidisc recorders have 2 or 3 switches, Disc In, Disc Eject, and Disc Write. This may be the same with the Sharp MD Recorder. The switches may be dirty. 😊

Could have been that too. But the broken cog is the most likely cause for this one.

Wow very interesting video well done 👏 I have 3 of sharp minidisc all of them have the same problems the gear ⚙ is cracked does anyone can 3d print them if can be printed and you can make lots of money by selling the gears there is lots of demand for the gears ⚙ and you can't find them on the Internet only one person sells these 3d printed gears but he is in USA selling for $30 and the postage is $28 on the top total $58 😱🙈 please let me know if you can find cheaper gear ⚙ thank you you are the best as Always

What if you you would just superglue the broken cog back onto the shaft ? 🤔😕

That tiny crack also stops it from meshing with the other cog and gets stuck. I've tried before with other small cogs

I have a Sharp MD-MS701 that works very well, but its case is badly worn. So I got a second player of the same type which is looking brand new. But with some discs it shows a UTOC Error. I tried several discs, TDK and Sony are working fine, but Maxell and BASF cannot be read. My old player is able to play all of the discs, so they are ok. So what could be the problem? If I had the same issue with this gear I think it should happen with all sort of discs and not only with a few. Any idea? (I did clean the lens with alcohol)

Is it exactly the same model? Some older players won't read the long play format discs. That's all I can think of.

That's very odd then. I have no idea why it wouldn't work. Maybe the laser is a bit weak.
