Great looking force. I actually started painting some AWI last week, not back to my usual pace yet as life keeps getting in the way, but some progress. Great paint job and update, looking forward to seeing more. Do love AWI, one of my favorite periods. 🤩

Awesome looking minis and they look great as units. The civilians add a lot of options to game play. Is the series you mention the one that co ers the lady who used the washing on her clothes line to send messages ? Sharp Practice is one of the systems we are all picking forces to try in 2024. I am leaning towards Spanish Gurillas with some 95th in support:).

Hi Aled, glad you like them buddy. Yes mate that’s the one, I’ve been doing some more reading recently about the Culper ring and I’ve found it a very interesting subject. Sharp Practice is such a versatile set of rules that you can dip your toe into many settings without having to build large armies for. That sounds an interesting idea mate, look forward to seeing them. 😁👍

Are there many other novels that could provide a background for a game?
@BattleBunkerHQ
@BattleBunkerHQ 9 ай бұрын
It depends on the period you are looking for, examples are; Bernard Cornwell is one of my favourite writers and for the AWI period he wrote Redcoat, Napoleonic period he wrote the Sharpe series and the ACW period he wrote the Battle Flag series. All of these I’ve enjoyed reading and make good narratives for our games. Of course we can’t leave another series of books which are also great fun to read and that’s the Flashman series written by George MacDonald Fraser. Hope that helps Leon 😁

@@BattleBunkerHQ I’ve read all the Bernard Cornwall books & I had the latest as a Xmas present however I’ve not read the Flashman books. I was thinking ACW. The books that Mr Cornwell wrote didn’t develop the setting enough. Perhaps an American novelist would have given the grey or the blue more depth. The same goes for the AWI, there must have been very many more small battles that will suit a skirmish battle like S.P. or a larger Skirmish game like Pickets Charge at 1 figure = 20 men. In that case a 6’ X 4’ table with a brigade of infantry, a cavalry regiment and an artillery battery. Those types of small engagements must have been very common, either real or fictional. As a Napoleonic gamer for over 55 years the group I played with would sneer at anything smaller than Quatre Bras. However if I was playing a game where A. P. Hill sent an Aide to me or my General to say the federal army was taking a defensive position covering the road bridge and ford so I was to take my brigade with cavalry and artillery and scout the river to the North with the object of finding a crossing or a bridge to fall upon the enemy flank. I wouldn’t know if that was practical or not as I had never played an ACW game since around 1970/1. So it would seem possible to me given the peninsula war and the crossing of the Coa and taking wellingtons infantry across in barges. What I’m saying is that even in a fictional game it must seem to be possible.

I would think those types of actions were quite common in those periods, a reconnaissance in force, an intelligence gathering or a foraging mission would all make for a good scenario in Sharp Practice. Another way to look at it, is why not make these smaller games apart of a bigger one, say on one game session you play the smaller game and on the next game session the results of that game has an effect on the objectives of the bigger game. Just a few thoughts on how we play here 😁

Could those figures be fitted on 12.5mm to 15mm bases to give the close order look of British Infantry rather than open order infantry used for skirmishing. I know penny bases are convenient and at a penny each compared to mdf 20mm bases which cost about 10p each. As a note it’s not wise to use steel washers as a base because of corrosion difficulties. Brass or better yet copper is better suited for basing. As an aside, steel washers could be coated in araldite and baked in the oven. Incidentally, metal bases are better for plastic miniatures as they won’t blow over when the table is knocked or the door is slammed by a wife or mother for som reason or other. 😊

Hi Leon, thank you for watching. I would say that it would be a very tight squeeze to fit them on a 15mm round base (you may have to trim some of the miniatures base to get them to fit). But, if you didn’t want to use round bases but still wanted them to be on individual bases, then they could fit on a 15x20mm base (again you may have to trim the minis base). I agree with you about plastic miniatures, we always try to weight them where we can. 😁👍

@@BattleBunkerHQ I just wanted to get minis shoulder to shoulder. 15mm minis would normally fit on a 7.5mm base but I’m not sure about AB Minis or most other 18mm figure . I’m pretty sure that Perry AWI and ACW minis will fit on a 15mm base. In general, if a scenario works well for 15mm figures on a 6x4 table then a table size for 28mm figures should be 50% greater ie. 9x6. Because all the bases , buildings and woods are almost that much bigger It may be ok with an 8x5.33 table which is 33% or 2ft longer and 33% or 16” wider. 8 x 5 is the best working size if you have the space which is actually two 5x4 tables fastened together If you struggle with space perhaps a 5x4 table will do. As Space is infinite so it is that dining room tables aren’t ;-)
