A lot or people say this is a great video however, I can't confidently take out and replace a transmission with this video personally. Never done it before so I'm gonna find the more detailed videos you mentioned with the multi-part series with videos lasting 30 minutes or more. That should give me the details on all this especially since I've never done it before. You are absolutely correct when you stated "if someone else can do it, so can you". That I wholeheartedly agree on. Thank you for uploading and sharing.

Good video, thanks for making a overview video that covers the questions that matter. All I wanted to know was if I could pull the tranny and leave the motor hanging, did I need to pull the subframe, was there any weird twisting or angles needed to get the tranny out, etc. I didn't need a video showing me where every bell housing bolt was or that I need to disconnect the shift cable and wiring connections....I know that stuff, it's the same with ANY tranny R&R, I just wanted Corolla specific coverage and you did it. Thanks again.

I've owned a 1998 Chevy Prizm for about 16 years. After 140,000 miles, it suffered a broken cv axle. It was replaced and it fell out after a few months. The car wouldn't move in any gear, but it was fixed after the CV axle was popped back in. A month later, it refuses to move. The CV axle seems fine and in place. I towed it to a trusted shop and I'm waiting for the call to find out how much it's going to cost this time. I'm hoping for a broken speed sensor or an issue with the fluid. If it's catastrophic, I might decide to swap the transmission myself. It's worth a shot. The shop quoted me at $1,500 for a transmission replacemt including parts and labor. It sucks, but at the end of the day, it can be fixed or replaced. Do you think anyone with basic mechanical experience can tackle this job? If it was a piece of junk, beat up car I'd just sell it for parts. But the car has great paint and looks great for its age. So, I'm trying to keep it running. It's my little brother's car. We'll see what happens. I'll provide an update soon. Wish me good fortune, ya'll. Thanks.
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 5 жыл бұрын
Good morning Louis. First off I would be very surprised if that transmission went bad. It is a good possibility that the first time the CV axle was installed incorrectly and that is why it popped out which is why your transmission could possibly be bad today because it sheared the end of the axle off inside the transmission I’ve seen this happen once or twice in my 20 years of experience I certainly hope that’s not the case I do believe that somebody with limited mechanical experience could change this particular transmission because it’s actually really simple and I think it’s awesome that you were considering doing it. I looked up the transmissionsfor your vehicle I need one more piece of information I would need to know if it’s a three or four speed? If it’s a four-speed it’s about $200 for a used transmission which means they don’t go bad very often. If it’s a three speed it’s about anywhere from $500-$700 for a used transmission and if you send me your ZIP Code I can tell you exactly which junkyards near you have them or at least lead you in the direction to call them yourself. I hope it’s not a bad transmission and I wish you the best of luck but always remember if anyone else can do it you can do it to. Have the best of days God bless
@LuisRamirez-ln3cj
@LuisRamirez-ln3cj 5 жыл бұрын
@@sharpcarco Thanks for the tips. You're spot on with your suspicion that the end of the axle sheared off. That's exactly what happened when the axle popped off. But the shop replaced the axle and it was fine for almost a month. They were able to find the clip and removed it from the differential. But the little piece that broke off may have fallen into the transmission and settled on the pan, according to the mechanic. The transmission is a 3-speed automatic. My zip code is 92835.

You will have to get a hold of me on Clays AC and auto repair on the Facebook and send me a message and I can send you the information it looks like there’s quite a few close to you for about $350-$400. Average replacement cost of that transmission at a shop that is making good money it’s probably only about 6 to 700. $1500 for a used transmission with installation is extremely high in my opinion and I do take into consideration that they have to make money. And as far as being right about what the problem was that’s kind of cool. That’ll be the third time in 20 years that I’ve ever heard of that but to be honest with you it’s because it was not installed properly. And technically speaking it is the repair shop that installed the axle originally for the person who put it in there to begin with I hate to say that because I do not like kicking people while they are down but it is the truth. Send me a shout out and I will give you the places that have it cheaply around you

@@sharpcarco I'll be contacting you on FB shortly. I just came back from the shop. The shop owner told me he took the car on a test drive and everything appeared to be fine and then he stepped on the gas and the car picked up speed, but the trans then locked up...so there's something very wrong with it and it's pretty much a ticking time bomb. I got him to come down to $1,400 from his original quote of $1,550 while talking to him. The car will stay at the shop for a few days while we decide what to do next. It's all up to my brother, but I'm not getting rid of the car regardless. If he decides to buy another car, I'll tow the Prizm home and try to fix it myself over the next few months. I'll see if I can get the shop owner to come down in price a bit more. He seems like a very decent guy, so I may have some more wiggle room. Thanks for your help.

@sharpcarco

Honestly I’m not certain. It seemed to have a broken pin inside the transmission I did not take it apart because I’m not a transmission technician and because a used transmission was so affordable I mean it was a couple of hundred dollars. If I would’ve taken it apart it would’ve cost more money for seals gaskets etc. etc. then the part to repair it I could’ve spent $1000 plus several extra hours worth of time so it just made more sense to replace it. Because it would not have been a simple area to just remove but I assume that it would be repairable because it was just a broken pin more than likely in one area of the transmission so if transmissions are unavailable to you this might be something that you could actually fix.

Hey man! Great video! I know it’s an old video but I was wondering, I went ahead and bought wheel bearings for my Corolla, big wobble sound I figured, ended up being inner axle wobble which I read was “differential bearings” within the transmission. Do most mechanical work, never inner transmission work, Wondering if those are replaceable (have not seen any info on it) or even worth replacing, or going ahead and replacing the transmission is necessary. I live in San Diego CA transmission is probably about $600 just for the transmission. Any help appreciated thanks!

Most of the time here in the states when the torque converter comes it’s empty so we put a little bit in it before we put it on you don’t have to worry about overfilling it just pay attention when you get close to the amount that is supposed to have be in it . It’s not good to Over fill transmissions but not the end of the world if you were like just a little bit over just watch what you’re doing

yes, the code of P0741 will appear (check engine light on, use scan tool to pull the code) and indictes problem with lock up solenoid but it is usually the torque convertor failing and the stator bushings on the front of the transmission pump are also usually bad (you can replace the stator bushings when you replace the torque convertor). Many people will replace the torque convertor lock up solenoid first, but it is very seldom the issue and just a waste of money. Google P0741 for Toyota Corolla......there is extensive info on this issue. I just bought a 2007 Toyota Corolla with this issue and have a good used transmission with torque convertor that I am going to swap in and be done with it.

Only thing I can recommend is too remove the shifting cable from trans and check and see if you can move it freely. If the shifter moves free your trans has a problem on the inside if not your cable is bad. Transmissions are super cheap for these but hope you don’t need one. They are so cheap used (about 300.00) they are not worth taking apart to fix. At least if you have to pay someone to do it
