I lost my father to pancreatic cancer in 2012, I was 17. We shared a love of the Sharpe books and even more so the series with Sean Bean. When I miss him I still come back to listen to this when I'm struggling. Keep on soldiering through the shit that life throws at you and remember to call out a bastard when you find one!

I love your approach. I share the feeling of huge loss and I had my dad until I was in my thirties. I love certain stories, movies and tv shows for the same reason that you mention. My dad was a medic in Vietnam and was a total cynic about war, just like Sharpe. Take good care of yourself man. Your own kids will know their grandfather through you and he sounds like a man worth knowing. Calling out bastards is always, always the way to go.

I have been captivated by Wellington’s campaigns against Napoleons armies since I was a teenager (I’m 78 ) I first became enthralled by him when I found a book that had his letters to his bosses? back at the war office. They were wonderfully acerbic and to the point. I’m surprised that he kept his job, Try as I may, I can’t find even one ancestor who fought for British in that war. They were all already in the US and fighting against the kings forces if they fought at all.I do have one who was a Loyalist in Virginia during the Revolution.but most were fighting for the US during that time.

I am of part Swedish and part Tunisian ancestry, so yeah, nothing British about me at all. But I started watching this series, Master and Commander and Hornblower many years ago when I was little, and I love it so much. Of all history, the British/English history is the most interesting, its number one for me. I really love the British/English history especially during the Napoleonic times, but also during the Renaissance and the 17th and 18th century. The Red Coats, the gentlemen officers, the nobles, the British Royal Navy, everything about it is so damn cool, I love it, and I love history. I would love to visit London in the future. I was in 2rgj in belfast palace barracks in 1995. We had just arrived, r coy and the camp was top heavy with 2 para. I remember walking into the naafi with Sharpe playing on tv. Some paras started getting mouthy about our regiment and Sharpe. Whst followed was a 300 + squaddie brawl which ended with some poor para loosing his spleen. Needless to say the paras didnt get mouthy again. Great days, tough men and great regiment. Swift and bold

As a Dane I'll say this. The Helmand province under French command was swimming in bribes. When UK moved in and we subsequently came under British Task Force Helmand all hell broke lose. Why? Indeed I guess I am a wounded warrior, as sadly had to have my right foot and part of my leg amputated following a freak accident involving hydraulics on the digger ... Anyhow , I somehow thought of this series and started to watch it again. Yes it's acting but , as a man watching it , you can but admire the bravery and courage of the men who once fought in the armies of England and France. As you watch it again, and again, you'll see the lilt of Irish humour coming through with Harper... And indeed it's most like the Irish I once knew , who sadly have passed into the next realm AH, SURE IT COULD BE WORSE SIR.... WE COULD BE WITHOUT THE TAE. They were veterans from the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular army and were sent to attack settlements on the Potomac. Second, President Madison was not in command of the army at Bladensberg, Brigadier William Winder was. The tune is an old Scottish folk song which has had various words put to it over the years. These words were written in the 1990s by a folk musician and actor John Tams who appeared in the Sharpe TV series. I think as few military units have 'adopted it' in recent times.

Me and my mates used to watch this in the 90s when i was in my early 20s . Was quite a journey sharp went on from india to waterloo. Great series

Wow look how young everyone looks, so many big actors too. Just bought the husband the Sharpe box set for Father's Day on behalf of the little one. Had this song stuck in my head since he put it on. To my surprise as well it came on a children's CD at play group in the same week.

When this series was first broadcast in the US on PBS I fell in love with it! There was something truely great about it and I cannot figure out what it is. Also loved this song!

@@NedTalbert I'm sorry to say i did not write the poem myself. It was written by John Tams, who not only wrote the music for the show, but also portrayed David Hagman in the show. He sings this verse in one of the episodes to the melody of "Spanish ladies", and I really liked it. In short; I'm not the poet, only a humble messenger.
