any scene involving Wellington and Nairn is a study in how to politely and legally BITCHSLAP your opponent into aristocratic submission

I always forget how Wellington and then Nairn put Sir Augustus in his place, it's a brilliant scene. The way that they use examples that Sir Augustus would understand to essentially dogpile his idiocy for display, like the Whig in Parliament and how "those at court" would view his loss of his wife afterwards, is just wonderful speechcraft. I bet Sir Augustus Farthingdale had to be swept up afterwards after he got so thoroughly burned

5:45 -- Farthingale: "Disciplined troops dissert sir! Nonsense!" Wellington: "Don't be a damned fool sir! Discipline is only a rabble rousers ____ from anarchy sir!" Wellington: "Mark me close colonel. What do you think the supreme virtue sir?" "To the Frenchman and his recent revolution it is Liberty", to the Whig puffing in Parliament it is license to do anything providing it does not disturb his pleasure, but to the common soldier it is anarchy to do whatever he please & be damned ..."

"To his fellow. But to me and Bonaparte, the supreme virtue is _order._ We are not whigs. We know that a man may love his neighbor of a Monday, and massacre him of a Tuesday, unless _Society keeps him in order._ These deserters, if not secured and shot, will destroy my army more surely than Bonaparte. And I'll thank you not to forget it."

It's interesting... in the book, when Sharpe is promoted, he feels some heartbreak as he is only made a Major in the ARMY of Great Britain, which means that it's a brevet rank. If it were a full rank, it would have read "Major in the Regiment of the South Essex" or something to that effect.

Sounds like Wellington didn't think much of his soldiers, but I think back then there were mostly given the choice of the army or prison, which would explain it. Then again, call me a bleeding heart but the treatment they got what with all the floggings would have driven many to desert
