Nice and concise instructional! I've been sharpening for years but I always like to see how others sharpen because as skilled as one can be there's always more to learn.

Thumbs up! I had never thought about making a little stropping set up to take in the field with me, that's pretty slick.

I have a way to sharpen a knife that most people would call heresy. It pretty ruins the stone but sharpens quickly, but when you work as a commercial fisherman, you don't have time to sharpen a knife. I held the knife by the handle and the stone in the other and quickly moved the stone up and down the blade about 15 times then turn the knife over. It would grove the stone and you had to rub it on concrete to flatten it back out. But when you have to deal with 500 fish in 2 hours, there's no time

I know that you will say that I am changing the bevel with my Ceramic Sharpener, and you are probably right. You have no argument from me that you sharpen the Mora the right way, but I will settle for quick and easy. It still shaves hair off my arm and slides through paper, so the knife is as sharp as I like it. 10 times on each side and BAM your done. I won't bother you anymore, but I do like your work and will continue to watch.

Thanks for telling us some of your experiences as I am an old S Fl salt and pretend Conch during weekends and some summers many years ago. I escaped what S Fl has become around 1980 for N Fl. I remember the Moras you talked about, I think they were #2s. We used them to fillet our catch.I liked them because you could get close to the fish skin and save all of the meat. I am trying to learn how to sharpen knives by the sanding belt method. Still learning but like the field method here in the video

Say Heah John, I finally joined the Mora Nation.. I have a older Frost Mora Clipper and a Vintage Mora with a Curly Birch handle with a hand gaurd and a metal Pommel. The Sheath is Leather also with Meral Trim. Embossed is Mora with a big "A" and Three Crowns. But recently I got my first Mora 510 and I'm glad the new 510 ' s are thinner. I also got the Classic # 1. The Mora 2000 and the Hatchet on the Combo Kit was at a decent price but in the orange, I paid a few more bucks and got tge the green, I also got the Bacho Laplander, but then I found out it also comes in the orange. I still like the Green better because it will match my other knives better like my Bokor Plus Black Vox Rold which I plan to carry with my new Trio, the handle color matches tge set and so does the Pouch for my Victorninox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78. Oh, I also got a Morakniv Exclusive Forest # 277 which I think will make a awesome neck knife with its laminated blade/leather sheath. The Mora Nation has alot of followers, I see alot of Mora Knives Reviewed, So I thought it was about time to get a new one, not that my Frost Mora isn't working good. Infact it's in tip top condition, I do use it as my neck knife sometime.

I suppose it's good to be methodical like that, but I wouldn't count in the beginning at least. You'll learn to see when it's time to change grit. I prefer to have the stone on something solid. It makes it easier to keep a steady angel, also I prefer to make small rotating movement. It feels kinda safer and is more effektiv I believe.

Yea it was called the Classic 1 or 2 at moraofsweden. se/home. it was all they had back then but you are right, you could do anything with it. I first learned to filet a fish with that knife, with the short blade you did have to go up both sides of the spine, so you got more meet off the bone. They use electric knives to filet fish these days and you can scrape enough meet off a Dolphin spine to make a chowder. 7 years in KW makes you a "Fresh Water Conch", folks were proud of that status.

However it is great to watch an artist do it right, great demo! A little while back I bought a Mora Companion like yours and found this cheap sharpener at Academy Sports called "Sharp n Easy Blaze Orange 2-Step Ceramic Knife Sharpener". It looked like crap but for only $4.00 I said what the heck. To my surprise it sharpens a knife in seconds without scratching the bevel edge, and I carry it on my key ring it is so small. If you get a chance, you should try it, they have a 2 step Diamond too.

Brother, Thanks for wathcing and taking the time to leave comments based on your experiences, they are extremely valued. I think it doesn't really matter how you sharpen your knife, as long as you get the results you want, and your knife is sharp enough to do perform the tasks you need it to safely, and efficiently. It seems like of practical outdoors experience. I look forward to learning from and sharing with you. Regards.

Say Heah John, I know you love your Mora. I do too, Infact, I love the Signature Profile on their knives. I also love my Dual Grind Mora's. But the last month or so, I used my Vintage Cold Steel Sisu. I named it my Rolls Royce Mora. Not only is it perfect spot on, It's also a Beautiful copy of a Tapio Wirkkala Puukku. Oh, Yeah, I keep it sharp, I use your Technique, but once I got it sharp, I just strop it back to hair popping sharp.,,.p

I haven't done a video in a long time, I became a Bird Trainer for 20 years and posted a few videos of my show. But the economy took a dive and no one wants to pay for a Parrot Show anymore, so I have been getting into Bushcraft a bit. I have learned a lot but feel like I am still a student. When we used Moras years ago, all they had was the red wood handled one. When we bought one from Key West to Texas we said "I need a net knife", didn't know they were call Moras and they were only $5.00.

Very clear and helpful, thanks! I'm definitely a sharpening beginner, so I appreciate the detailed demonstration, particularly the comments on how to maintain the right angle. What compound do you use on your strop?

Good info, thanks! A question: I cut myself with my Mora once upon a time (stupid mistake), and although I've got it sharp, again, the shine of the blade cheeks has been darkened/stained by the blood. I've tried using a buffing wheel with a fine rouge, but it doesn't have that original shine- Any suggestions besides don't cut myself?

using that diamond sharpener you can get away with work in the edge of it but I use stones and I'd wear my Stone edge out I've been looking at those diamond sharpeners for a few years I've never got one what do you like better about the diamond sharpener versus a stone and I like that leather strap you've made nice look forward to hear from you broke up blessed Ken nice playlist

Am I the only one who wears cut resistant kevlar gloves when sharpening and doing dangerous knife tasks? They're only about $12, and are easier to put on than bandaids and stitches. After sharpening the third knife, I get pretty clumsy... so for me, they're necessary.
@BushCraftBums11 жыл бұрын
Kevlar, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Keep in mind this vid was showing the sharpening of a severely dulled tool. normally I maintain my edge by stropping.. and than occasionally the fine stone, it is only when the edge is really damaged that I would go through the whole range of stones. Thanks again, Regards.

My only problem with how you sharpen is that you're using diamond stone. They can easily make a knife razor sharp, but they do so by being aggressive and cutting a lot more metal than natural stones. This usually doesn't matter, but if you use a knife often enough, diamond stones reduce the lifetime of the knife drastically. This may not matter on a knife you can replace as cheaply as a Mora, but I'd never use a diamond stone on a really expensive knife.
