Great info, I use these techniques for my tiny linoleum carving tools as well.

On the v-tool, what about the tiny radius on the nose where the two flat sides come together?
@BobsWoodStuff3 жыл бұрын
In the process of normal stropping, I don't address that part. If you notice that part is getting dull, or are doing a full sharpening, you can touch up that small part by twisting the V-tool as you pull it back, similar to how the gouge gets stropped.

Good presentation, as usual, Bob. Gives me a lot more confidence to sharpen without a guide. But, a question, is your bench really blue? If so, please explain.
@BobsWoodStuff3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott! Sharpening by hand is really the way to go. Yes, I dyed my bench blue. It looks better on camera that way, since it's a very different color than the wood I am working with on the bench.

Hello What is that yellow cube like soap?
@BobsWoodStuff Жыл бұрын
The yellow stuff is a honing compound, sometimes called rouge. It is a mildly abrasive material that you can load up the leather with.

I bought a set of imymee for whhitlling

I bought a set of Schaaf as my beginner set and it is really hard to hone right, I think I destroyed its v gouge already by trying to hone😢
@BobsWoodStuff7 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Carving tools in general are much harder to sharpen than woodworking chisels. I had to reprofile and hone my Schaaf carving tools to get a nice edge. Nowadays I would just buy the Swiss Made one that already has a great edge and all I need to do is strop.

@@BobsWoodStuff yeah i started collecting pfeil gouges almost one by one but every single one of them is so much a pleasure to use.

Doesn’t look like you’re applying much downward pressure?
@BobsWoodStuff Жыл бұрын
Just a little bit of downward pressure. This leather isn't very thick, so it doesn't flex very much.
