I usually use a full face helmet, ear muffs, safety glasses, full length leather apron, steel capped boots, chain-male gloves, oxygen mask and Lead lined underpants. You cannot be too careful.

wow that was really fast. Having said that when they are brand new they are quicker to sharpen than when they actually need it.

Correct. No need to align the blades top to bottom either. Only take the blades off if the sliding faces have significant damage, file & stone flat, assemble and then sharpen. Just a few strokes with a good file.... no side grinders, Dremels.....

I wish all You Tube Videos were this good. It gets right to the point without any talking. Most You Tube videos are some guy talking for the first five minutes before demonstrating and then over explaining everything for the rest of the video. If they talk for more than 30 seconds, it's going to be a shitty video.

Stihl KM131r user here... Always stop the blades apart before putting the sheath back on... They can get sticky and cause some grief to the system once started stuck together by sap

My hedge trimmer is only a month old. It's been squealing like crazy the last two uses. I spray with Stihl spray after every use. Even during use today as it was squealing so much. Will sharpening the blades fix the squealing noise?

You just need to move them either by hand or while the engine is running, press the trigger just a little so the blades are not on top of each other.

I asked the dealer about my HSE 81, they can do it for 120.- (~110 €), that's quite expensive...They told me to remove the blades, fix them on a support and then I could do it with a file, a bit like in this video. The issue is that there is a clip inside the gearbox that replaces one of the screw and makes it complicated to remove the blades and clean the gears. I finally managed to remove both blades with the clip in place but it's a bit tricky, and the gears are quite dirty, with solidified grease, I won't be able to clean these cogs correctly. My hedge trimmer is +12 years old, I only use it a few days every year and it works quite well, but a bit of care wouldn't hurt now.

If you sharpen into the blade, you exclude the need to clean the back of the blade with a whetstone.

You have to be careful with that. Sometimes sharpening creates burrs on the edge that can interfere with the movement of the teeth past each other. It can be so bad that the blades will actually hang up and they won't move past each other at all. That may lead you to think you have a clutch or transmission problem. Ask me how I know . . .

I mean to say, if you run the file towards the blade's edge, rather than away from it, no burrs will occur and the edge will be clean and sharp.

Absolutely unreal and unprofessional.Theres only one way to sharpen these blades-whether single or double sided.Remove both blades from the gearbox and sharpen each tooth (both edges) individually.Either use a vice in which case hold the pertinent tooth close to the vice-these blades are sprung steel so bounce if held too far away from the vice.Failing that,sharpen each blade on top of say a picnic bench,again,keep the tooth being sharpened close to the bench edge-again-they bounce.Then,take the burrs off the back of each blade with a whetstone.Then oil and use a green scouring pad to remove the build up of plant sap on the back of each blade.Reassemble,and now you have brand new blades.If you tried to do it as shown in this video,the machine would be rocking and moving all over the shop.Also consequently,theres a fair chance the file will hit the next tooth in an uncontrolled way.
