@schizoidboy
@schizoidboy 5 жыл бұрын
This line shows that Wellington is not going to be intimidated by someone who uses connections to get where they are, he has people he knows he can rely on when it comes to information, and this means he's not what is called in government circles an "empty suit," unlike Simmerson who lies to a commanding officer and tries to play the system. This is the reason Wellington is known as a great commander in history; for him the buck stops right at that desk.

Especially one who loses the king's colours by incompetence and negligence. Losing the colours because you got cut off from your colour sergeants and the colour party, attempting a pursuit and being beaten back wouldn't be looked on favourably, *but at least you'd tried* to recover them, and could socially recover - you were unlucky, or had been defeated, but you hadn't functionally abandoned them and your men. Letting them cross a bridge you intended to blow with only a token force, blowing it without letting them retreat, and not even providing covering fire of any sort is beyond belief, and beyond negligent. Even taking into account the inaccuracy and range of musketry of the day, there's not even a token attempt to defend the advance party.

I'm mesmerized by how many detestable traits you could cram into a single character into a single scene. From a writing standpoint it's simply glorious. In a single conversation Simmerson displayed(in order)... ▪︎Cowardice (Cutting and Running) ▪︎Lack of Integrity (Blatantly lying) ▪︎Sociopathy (Lying with gusto) ▪︎Nepotism (Trying to promote family) ▪︎Stupidity (Lying when an unaffiliated officer was right there with you and is _right there in the same room_ as you lie) ▪︎Arrogance (Assuming that said officer's word wouldn't be worth shit even though said officer is directly attached to his lord) ▪︎Malice (Smearing the only competent officer) ▪︎Hypocrisy (Blaming the one KIA officer for cowardice) ▪︎Lack of Accountability (Blaming said officer for losing colors) ▪︎Persistent Nepotism (Insisting on Gibbons promotion despite having nothing left to stand on) You couldn't make a character more hateable if you tried - and this show manages to achieve it in a *single scene!*

Well we see Leroy subtly react to Simmerson's more brazen nonsense, without him saying a word, we have enough to know how unhappy he is to be serving this man just from this scene. Meanwhile Simmerson gives Hogan a glare at one point, which further highlights how badly he underestimates Hogan if he actually thinks he can intimidate Hogan. In the opening scenes of Henry V they apologise for "one or two brawl ridiculous" (two or three men pretending to sword fight) and "for shame we try to recreate in this cock pit (tiny room) the glorious battlefields..." That "our imagination must create the armies and clothe the knights etc..." "Work, work your thoughts and in them see a siege... Imagine the reply has come from the town offering some small concessions, that the king likes not..." Sharpe is like that. Small low budget skirmishes pretending to be big battles. Wellington's rage is epic, but his charisma shines through when he switches gears almost instantly back to calm. Then when Simmerson tries to threaten him, he pauses and shoots him down very softly. At the beginning of the episode; Wellington and Hogan gave Simmerson this 'easy' assignment because they knew he was a coward and suspected he was spying on them for his "friends at court." Hogan set up destroying the bridge as a Win-Win: if Simmerson succeeded, he'd be a hero and not report anything malicious. If he failed (which they fully expected him to do so they sent Sharpe as insurance), he'd be forced to stay quiet. Even though Wellington predicted he would screw it up, I think there were five things in Simmerson's B.S. report that sent him over the edge: 1. Claiming Major Lennox panicked (Wellington served with Lennox in India and repeatedly called him an outstanding soldier). 2. Saying his nephew, Lt. Gibbons, acted bravely and deserved a promotion (He knew Gibbons was a milksop just like his uncle). 3. Devaluing Hogan's contradicting report by saying he was "only an engineer" (Figuratively hanging himself by admonishing his Intelligence officer). 4. Destroying the bridge after Sharpe, the Chosen Men and Capt. Leroy charged in to help Lennox (This cut off both a retreat and any backup to recover the Colours). 5. Blaming Lennox for losing the King's Colours (It wasn't enough his incompetence got him killed, he tried hiding behind a braver man's sacrifice to cover up his own cowardice).

This is a criminally underrated comment in this thread. Michael Cochrane is THE reason this scene works. Clearing his throat, his cheery "that's my style, sir". His sneering "merely an engineer, sir" The one careful step forward coming to a complete stop to deliver his line about friends at Horse Guards. He goes through an entire panoply of emotion and each one is real and believable. Not a forced moment in the entire scene. Not to take away a thing from anyone else, but even if you have never watched any of the rest of this series, and you don't know the backstory, you hate this guy. You want to see him skewered. So when David Troughton cuts loose it means something.

Fun fact: Simmerson’s actor, Michael Cochrane, was in the final episode of the original run of _Doctor Who_ to be recorded, 1989’s _Ghost Light_ (which was not the final one to be broadcast). ‘Well, sir, upon sighting the creepy alien woman who’d been living in the cellar, I naturally began to give her tips on acting ladylike. That’s my style, sir.’ Wellington’s actor, David Troughton, also appeared on TV _Doctor Who_ in 1968, 1969, 1972, and 2008 (and even more times in audio stories). His father, Patrick, of course played Doctor Who himself from 1966 to 1969, returning in 1973, 1983, and 1985.

@Fragileone1
@Fragileone1 5 жыл бұрын
At this period engineers and artillery were professionals, their commissions couldn’t be bought and sold and they had to pass out of the Royal Military academy. All of their promotions were also by seniority. Therefore engineer and artillery officers at this time were often qualitatively better than their infantry counterparts. However they were usually not aristocrats, as wealthy or of the same class of “gentlemen”. Therefore whilst you got some very good officers who bought commissions and didn’t as obviously play favourites with other gentlemen, like Wellington himself to an extent, you had others who hated those who had actually earned their rank and status as lesser.

I love how the scene shifts. Simmerson goes on and on, and eventually Wellington just calmly shuts him down. Even better is the timing of the explosion as Wellington reveals his true scorn of Simmerson. The ending is simply gold as Simmerson feels all important with his threat, but Wellington shuts him up so simply, making his threat a moot point.

“Gazetted Officer” For those wondering, as I was, here is an explanation. “An officer's commission was not considered official until he was "gazetted" - meaning that he was listed in the London Gazette. From the late 17th century until very recent times the London Gazette recorded the date on which the English officers of state took their oaths of office. This date may range from a day or two to several weeks after the date of the letters patent of appointment. The creation of peers, baronets and knights are also recorded. A list of officers killed and wounded at Waterloo appeared as a supplement to the Gazette on 1 July 1815 but other ranks did not normally appear until about the time of the Crimean War when full lists of casualties were given. Lists of money due to their dependents were also publicized there, as they were in the First World War.”

Forrest Penrod, while all you say is true it does not apply to this situation. What Simmerson is asking for Gibbons but Wellington (Wellesley still at this point) will give to Sharpe is what we now call a 'Battelfield promotion' subject to approval by Horse Guards (Ministry of the Army or Army National Command). Later in the series Sharpe loses that promotion and is returned to his 'subtantive' rank of Lieutenant. `Sharpes Company'

I know someone said it somewhere but I love the last little interplay. Wellington's parting words to Simmerson: "Today we had a skirmish, tomorrow we shall have a battle. You will be the first to see a French column, it is not a pretty sight. What you do then is up to you Sir. Good Morning." Or words to that effect. Now that is putting the boot in. Simmerson's grand action as he reported it to Horse Guards dismissed as a mere skirmish. Reading between the lines: And if you ran yesterday, just you wait until you see blue uniforms en masse. I am fairly sure you will be on the first ship home as soon as you stop running.

Great scene :) A very compelling portrayal of how to deal with incompetence, dishonesty and cowardice. Simmerson firstly tries to lie. Then he tries to discredit. For those who haven't read the books, this failure is so much worse in the books than you can imagine. Simmerson has about 1500 infantry with him against 400 cavalry. First Simmerson decides to do battle with the French. Only to realize his infantry can do nothing but stare at the French who just sits and watches. They even applaud the small army for their formations. Then he demands Sharpe's rifles skirmish with that cavalry. 30 men on foot, harassing 400 cavalry. Sharpe refuses this, and for a little while nothing happens. Then, when the French decide to leave while taunting their enemies, the Spanish fired on them from too far away. The French take this opportunity and just charge them. The Spanish just run, and instead of making them go away, Simmerson lets them into his ranks. With the fleeing Spanish comes the 400 cavalry. It does not take long before everyone is fleeing, except for Sharpe and a small detachment of infantry set to guard the bridge. Everyone just tries to force their way across the bridge, losing the King's Colours, and only in the nick of time, Sharpe saves the regimental colors. The French managed to rout 1400 men and take the king's colors. Sharpe defeats them in the end with some cunning. But it is more like a draw. Then Sharpe is arrested for not going full-on suicide with his rifles... Sufficient to say that Wellesley is mad. Because there were devastating losses.

It's a cliche, but some aristocrats like Simmerson really do live in a world where birth, nepotism and favoritism are the only measure of worth. Even after Wellesley has ripped him a new one, he still believes Wellesley will have to throw him a bone, such as appointing his nephew to a command position, to avoid ticking off his allies back in London. He honestly can't process the fact that Wellesley could care less about his vaunted connections.

In a different Sharpe video posted to KZbin, someone proclaimed that this program is how you do a period drama on a bugger-all budget. I have to agree. Cinematography holds up. I'm glad my friend told me about this show. Only downside is that I have to continually run to Wikipedia to understand something in every episode...except that's as it should be. Period pieces shouldn't dumb themselves down because the viewer lacks a full understanding of how their language used to be employed. Also, I recognized Daniel Craig in this.
