Idk if titanium anodizing is similar to aluminum anodizing, but I learned that Easy Off oven cleaner strips off aluminum anodizing within seconds. It does dull out the aluminum but doesn't take much to clean parts to re-anodize them or to polish them out. I've stripped off a lot of aluminum anodizing like this for some R/C builds.

@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 3 жыл бұрын
I had a big discussion about this a few years back. It's a little foggy, but I believe the aluminum wire worked kind of like copper wire works. You'll get some color, but you have very little to no color control and it may not come out even. You can always use a Q-tip soaked in the electrolyte solution if you really want to try it without wire altogether as well.

So I could re anodized the blue thumb stud on my Sebenza with just a sponge without removing it?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 4 жыл бұрын
As long as its titanium, you definitely can. I would probably put a good coat of nail polish around it on the blade first though. Stainless will corrode extremely fast if any of the electrified water drips from the sponge while you do it.
@justin76kocaj14
@justin76kocaj14 4 жыл бұрын
SharpKnifeNuts so nail polis will protect it. Does the nail polish have to be wet still?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, nail polish will keep it protected. It does need to be very dry though. I would coat it, hit it with a heat gun or hair dryer, then I would repeat that 1 or 2 more times so you know you have a good coat. As long as the blade is coated it's fine. Then just use acetone to remove it after you spot anodize and you'll be all set. I would probably use a Q-tip to anodize instead of a sponge if you're just doing the thumb studs.

Does the solutions in the plastic Tupperware go bad after some time? What needs replacing for best results? I'm assuming you can reuse the Whink for a while and probably the Windex too. What about distilled water and the distilled and baking soda solution?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 жыл бұрын
After you use the Whink quite a few times it starts to loose its potency and take a bit longer to do the job. It'll still work, just takes longer. The windex is fine for quite some time. I change the distilled water pretty much every time. It's only like 88 cents a gallon, so it isn't really that big of deal. I've left the solution sit for a while before, and it can get kind of nasty. Better to just change that stuff out.

Looks so easy! Leave it to me to mess this simple process up! lol I don't have the titanium wire, but i do have misc pieces of titanium (i think) or so I was told. Anyways, like I said, I don't have the wire. But, being me, I was in a rush to try it. Well, long story short, all I get is massive bubbling. At best, a spot turned mild yellow. But that's it. I wanted to do scrap pieces that I cleaned up before moving to some rings I made. However, all I get is bubbles...as if the water was boiling off the metal. Could this just be something as simple as I need the Titanium wire? Because I was thinking of getting the scrap I have and making a hook out of the titanium I have. Or, just order wire and wait. lol
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 4 жыл бұрын
It really is easy once you get the hang of it, but there definitely is a learning curve. From what you just described it sounds like you have something in the bath that shouldn't be in there. If you watch my "anodizing with copper wire" video you'll probably see something very similar. You have to make sure that anything that goes into the bath is 100% titanium, except for your cathode, that can be stainless(not mild steel, that could cause issues too. It has to either be stainless or titanium). Sounds like you've got a piece somewhere down the line that definitely isn't titanium. I would swap out pieces one by one till you figure out which one is the culprit, or just wait a day or two for the ti wire, lol. I'm impatient too, I get it, but that could definitely be causing you more grief. Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, ask away!

Have u Ever done Sponge Anodising on aluminium? How was that? If you dont u multi etch..or rust remover...will the anodizing peel off..? Please do reply...thanks for ur video. Ur Awesome!!!
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 2 жыл бұрын
No, the process for anodizing aluminum is a bit different. No, the ano will not peel off. If you etch the surface it creates microscopic pits in the titanium which gives the ano more surface area, and in turn makes it harder to scratch off. You can anodize without etching, but it will be easier to scratch off, it'll look a bit different, and I've found that if I don't anodize first, sometimes there are colors that I can't achieve unless I etch. Hope that info helps! Good luck

Do you really need to use the rust remover or will it be similar if you just go from the windex to distilled water to anodizing?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 6 жыл бұрын
You don't need to use it, but the colors come out significantly more vivid, bright and pronounced when you do use it. Without the Whink some of the colors will not come out. I just did a project to achieve the toxic green color and didn't use the Whink at first. I wasn't able to get the green color without it. I have another video that I filmed already showing what a big difference it makes. I'll be putting that out as soon as I finish the editing. Stay tuned!

What's your opinion of using Borax instead of baking soda? Is there a difference?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 6 жыл бұрын
Borax, TSP, baking soda, it really doesn't matter what you use to make your electrolyte solution. The water is what does the work, the additive is just an ion source. Whatever you have on hand and readily available, use it. You're not going to notice a difference between them in regards to titanium anodizing. I recommend baking soda because most people have it in their kitchen cabinet. I had it in mine when I started, so that's just what I've stuck with.

It can last forever if you aren't really rough on it. Sometimes you'll scratch it, but it can always be redone fairly easily. I like some of the minor scratches personally, kind of adds character. It can be a pretty durable coating.

Does the negative have to be the one hooked onto the sponge? Or positive? Vice versa
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 жыл бұрын
If you always remember no matter what way you're anodizing, positive goes to the piece you're anodizing -"P" to the "P", weather its sponge anodizing, or bath anodizing "Positive to the Piece". Lol, that's how I remember anyway

Can you get Multi-Etch there? That is the next best option. It can be a bit more expensive, but it works well and doesn't contain acid.

I've never done anodizing Ti, I've only done heat treat, mask my Ti gadgets with permanent marker or nail polish, just write or draw on it and then let dry. heat treat the outside with higher temp and get rid off the marker then heat treat the design with lower temp. I really wanted to see if you can do that with anodizing. Mask a pattern design on Ti with marker and anodize the outside with higher voltage and the design with lower voltage

Yeah, one of my other videos show exactly what you're talking about with masking with the nail polish.

Can you poor the whisks rust stain remove back into the container or is it best to always use fresh chemical sauce? What if you only do one piece does it matter? Or just dispose proper? I couldn't get the titanium wire in time so i got these earring hook things i thought they'd be 5x as big because of the picture but it ended up being small so i will weave the pieces together forming a chain to wrap around the titanium i am anodizing... THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME and this Tutorial! It was really helpful and awesome this and the one before and many more im sure i just have not seen them all. DOES Aluminum wire work? Or does it suck battery too much? Also can you do this same process with aluminum instead of titanium and use the same titanium conductor like the wire? If you can answer these that would super helpful man! Thank you so much again for the video though, so awesome! are there more colors beyond 12 x 9v batteries? Have u tried? is it dangerous to that, add more than 12? Do you know tape works best from preventing a coat of anodization? gorilla glue tape i heard was water resistant but is there something better and more precise? Gorilla glue is tough and a bit hard to cut cleanly.

Hey bud, thanks for watching! You can definitely re-use the Whink, but I would store it in a seperate plastic container so you don't contaminate the brand new stuff. Eventually you'll have to change it out once it stops working as well. I have been told that aluminum wire does work, but I haven't personally tried it. As far as the tape goes, I have a couple videos on that on the channel if you want to check them out. The newest 2 videos cover masking with adhesive materials. Electrical tape will work, but there are better options. Check the videos out for more info on that.

As far as other colors, after 12 batteries the colors start to repeat themselves, and when you start getting up to the higher voltages it starts to get kind of dangerous. No need to go any higher, it won't do any better or give you any other colors.
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 жыл бұрын
And finally no, this is not the same process to anodize aluminum. There is a completely different process for that. I'll eventually be doing a series on that as well, just haven't got to it yet.

Great technology. Is it possible to use this technology for bigger size part
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You just need a larger bath to anodize in, and a larger cathode. You can do any size you can fit in the anodizing bath.

Just realized you're comment is on the sponge anodizing video, you can do larger pieces the same way as well though.

if you added that clip (as it was at the end of the vid) to a single 9v battery ano (bronze color) would all the sections not blue/purple get the Bronze color? what if you added it to 12 battery Green ano?.. would the whole thing turn green?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I completely understand the question. So if a titanium piece was anodized at 30 volts, but had some bare spots, then you re-anodized that piece again at 10 volts, only the bare spots would get the 10 volt color. If you re-anodized one more time at 100 volts the entire piece would turn the 100 volt color. Does that answer your question?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 жыл бұрын
If you always anodize the highest voltage color first, then anodize lower voltages each time going forward it allows you to keep all of the previous colors. Does that make sense?

Feel free to message me if you run into any issues as well. I try to do my best helping people troubleshoot anodizing problems they may be having. If you 100% stick to the tutorial video you shouldn't have any issues though.

No joke I had whink rust stain remover in my mouth it took a layer of skin from my mouth . Someone put some in a airplane vodka bottle and put it back with my other alcohol . Luckily I was just holding in my mouth for a toothache and not to drink, wouldn't have been good..

Holy shit, that sounds absolutely TERRIBLE! How long ago? Did they do it intentionally?? Have you seen a doctor for it? Sorry for all the questions, I've just never heard of something like that happening. Not to worry you any more that you already have, but the reason for my concern is that the active ingredient (hydrofluoric acid) can penetrate the skin, numb the nerves, and can actually start to decalcify bone. That's my main concern with you having it in your mouth around your teeth.
