I am surprised that Shashi Tharoor didn't mention bi-weekly letters Nehru wrote to all the Chief Ministers describing the status of union. That was one of the most democratic action, and he never asked them to keep them secrete except in the case of reorganization of states along linguistic lines stating that he himself had no idea how that was done and wait for a while until he and the cabinet digest the report. One more thing to note is he rarely promoted Indira, actually her name doesn't even appear until she was elected Congress President. If you read Nehru letters to the Chief Ministers you will get hints on solutions to many problems facing India today.

Tharoor ji is one of my good choices not form Indian political arena but as an academician. Great fan of his English. Yes, it is correct that what ever good or bad, we are today is mainly for contribution of Nehru. A man himself is an amalgamation of goods and bads. Now, Nehru was always unchallengeable by attitude since he became prominent. It is also true for such person no advisor was required or none preferred to become. For this reason in last twenty five years of his life he took many decisions which were harmful and created some never ending problems for India and world also ( refusal of vito). After about five years of Nehru's kingship, few personalities came forward from INC like Dr . B.C.Roy, Prof. H.Kabir etc who could influence /pressurize Nehru to agree upon some very very important jobs for India. For example building of IIT, Durgapur Steel plant etc.were never normally approved by Nehru. Nehru's magic was acceptable and was truly mesmerising but his overall performance was below average. And because of some lacunae in his sense of attachment, his endeavours could hardly earn honour for India. I don't think Nehru's soul was belonging to Indian, her culture and history. Otherwise, he could have won the world.
