When the Munshi enters into the play and tells the nawabs about the British version of the game , speaks volumes about Premchand's brilliance. As a pawn can take an extra first step in the British version of chess , which implies that British officers can take things into their own hands as long as it benefits the empire. When a pawn reaches the last line he becomes as powerful as the queen , which implies how great and powerful a British offical can become if he climbs up the ranks . Now comming to the screen play of the movie , the English dialogues have got to be the best ever written for an Indian movie.

But he was not a despot (from the limited knowledge I have about him) that oppressed his people in order to fund an extravagant lifestyle. As he himself said, the people of Lucknow were aware of who he was and loved him for that and didn't seek refuge within the British cantonments, and also that some of the finest soldiers within the British ranks came from his kingdom. He was pretty liberal for his time, that he liked to dress up as Krishna, and composed some songs and poems in honour of Krishna. Many able administrators are despots - they either oppress their own people to protect and enrich themselves, or oppress foreigners to enrich their kingdom/country (like the British and other powers did). It's a zero-sum game for the most part.

a lot of my lovely Indian brothers can never ever understand the intricates and deep meanings of this master piece of Satyajit ray ever..............the British was so focused on devouring India and all that the Indian prices did was to just joke and live their luxurious lives. in fact a lot of Indian princely states supported the British monarchy on India which shows that the Indian will and are inferior to the great Britain. Indians have ego but no understanding of what happened and what is happening. The only few that are different are some intellectuals and mostly RSS and Modi ji who is very aware of the true intentions of outsiders.

An evergreen classic. It takes you into that transitional period of Indian history through a time machine oblivious to the present and that stands out Ray from others. Whenever I watch the masterpiece -- though the form and content are different -- The Guns of Navarone, I feel like I reached out to that period. I read in a magazine about this movie- before the shooting started, Mr. Khan was ill and was hospitalised. some of his 'friends' visited him there and (mis)informed that Mr. Ray is casting someone else instead of him. He became so upset that his condition deteriorated. Upon hearing this Mr. Ray rushed to him and confirmed his casting as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Sandip Ray said in an interview that after the shooting was over, Mr. Khan gave a party in a five star hotel and invited each and every member of the cast and crew.

Everything in that movie is just larger than life.... Brilliant acting, Actors speaking in original Accent, Realistic Acting, impactful dialogues, Brilliant use of Sporting Characters, Visually Appealing.....And.this Shatranj ke Khiladi ,I don't wanna disrespect but this movie has so many unnecessary dialogues and Unnecessary length of scenes, it's very easy to loose the plot ..........Go watch Bajirao Mastani and Padmavati after this...... The accents were actually awful because none of the actors in today's world of hindi movies has the slightest idea of how to speak hindi or urdu properly, unlike those in Shatranj ke khilari. By the way, since the khiljis never actually spoke urdu or hindi, so historical accuracy has been compromised. In addition, the music of Padmavat was truly terrible. I feel most of its songs will be forgotten by the end of 2019, which they should be. To claim it is a "masterpiece" is just hyperbole on your part. Bhansali, has claimed many such "masterpieces" in the past, which have been forgotten in less than 3 years Ref: Shatranj ke khilari If you think this movie is slow paced, then you haven't understood its import in the least. It is meant to mock the slow paced life of the nobleman of the period, who whiled their time away in fruitless pursuits without a care, while everything which they ought to have cared for was slipping way from their grasp. Lastly, one period (.) is sufficient to end a sentence. To use more is grammatically wrong.

Outstanding story by Munshi Premchand and handle by an equally excellent director. However, amidst all the grand setup of things, the one that caught my special attention is Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. What a completely different Amjad Khan I saw today! OMG! I'm pretty sure 90% of Indians haven't seen this version of Amjad Khan. What a talented artiste we lost at an untimely age.

a lot of my lovely Indian brothers can never ever understand the intricates and deep meanings of this master piece of Satyajit ray ever..............the British was so focused on devouring India and all that the Indian prices did was to just joke and live their luxurious lives. in fact a lot of Indian princely states supported the British monarchy on India which shows that the Indian will and are inferior to the great Britain. Indians have ego but no understanding of what happened and what is happening. The only few that are different are some intellectuals and mostly RSS and Modi ji who is very aware of the true intentions of outsiders.

The Plot depicts two wealthy Jagirdars and noblemen brilliantly played by Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey, living a life of luxury and decadence. The noblemen are oblivious about not who but when the Sultanate will fall and the rulers change. Although the script draws a caricature of the king King Wajid Ali Shah the last Nawab of Awadh, played brilliantly by Amjad Khan, the proud and shrewd king is aware that other princely states have fallen, his kingdom is the last bastion of the Mughal Sultanate and now his forces face a British army with superior weaponry. He is not willing to “sign” a new treaty with the British. All elements of the movie are excellent especially the dialogues and Satyajit Ray handled the screenplay and direction as a maestro. Special mention must also be made to the Costume Designer Shama Zaidi, who designed excellent costumes for the two Jagirdars. When the script is well written all actors come alive in the film. Magnificent acting performances by Sanjeev, Jaffrey, Richard Attenborough, Tom Alter and Amjad Khan, there are other lighter moments with Shabana Azmi and Farida Jalal. *The film is exceptional and a must watch.*

So we have to leave some space if in case a better film than the above comes along, then we can grade it higher at 9. Satyajit Ray's credit is indeed included in the 8 stars rating.

*Deshik Dutta* - You asked a question, “Please shed light on the parts where Ray failed to achieve the optimum?” My response below: Probing or exploring the motifs, thought, concept, or objects formed by the power of imagination by a film director, regarding a dominant idea or central theme of a film subject, is an intricate and difficult problem and not easy to evaluate. Also, to answer your question, I am faced with the conundrum of trying to judge the performance of a film director without having any professional film technical elements experience myself. Realistically, one simply has to accept ‘as is’ whatever the film’s elements portray because no two minds are same and there always will be difference of opinions. So, a film director who controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision, to that one can conclude, that Satyajit Ray did the job to the best of his ability. However, since you have asked a difficult question and to which a response may be difficult to comprehend, I will attempt to point out one single point where Ray could have really done better. Some may disapprove criticizing Ray while others may even find it malicious, but I can assure you, not all films of Ray are good and a few of them are really ludicrous. Having said that and as I am about to evaluate Ray and put in my two-cents, I am a little uneasy and I feel like a man holding a soap bubble, afraid to move or breathe in case it bursts. And so here it comes: The technical aspects of this film (including script and direction) are good only because of its historical context referring to the moods, attitudes, and conditions that existed during that time. I believe, what was missing in that context that would have had a greater impact on the relevance of the event, was the physical environment that the Mughals built. The architectural heritage of the Mughal era beginning from Babur (1526) to Bahadur Shah (1857) is staggeringly rich. The splendor of iconic mosques, palaces, tombs, fortresses, beautiful gardens, magnificent buildings and monuments, *if some of these elements were included in the scenes,* it would have given the visuals and screenplay of the film an enhanced aesthetic, iconographic, and stylistic unity to the artistry of the Mughal period which is the subject foundation of this film. The province of Oudh (Uttar Pradesh) is filled with these magnificent buildings. The film does show a few snapshots here and there, for example at 4:31 for about 15 seconds, but what a terrible visual display. Another example, when both Jagirdars decide to play chess without getting disturbed by their wives, look at the scenes at 1:37:04, Ray chose outdoor scenes of slum and poverty that are incompatible with nobility. The same outdoor scenes could have been picturized in front of any majestic building which would clearly have elevated the visual images. I am aware that some of Ray’s art films had faced funding problems, but I think Ray completely missed a great opportunity for grandiosity in this film. It wouldn’t have cost much to include grandiose visuals of the physical environment. Those scenes were necessary because that’s how the Mughals lived. An international audience even if not aware of the History of India would appreciate the greatness of the context of magnificent buildings and noblemen complimenting each other. It’s similar to watching romantic films of the late 60’s and early 70’s in which one see’s a beautiful natural environment (Nature) like the Hill Stations of Kashmir and Simla etc. The screenplay images of the mountains, trees, gardens, sky, snow and fog, accompanied with melodious songs, it simply enhances the beauty and romanticism of the scenes in the film. I hope I have made a reasonable case with some clarity to your satisfaction, as to how Ray could have achieved the optimum. But unfortunately Ray is no longer with us to respond and we can only wonder what must have been going through his mind while he was making this wonderful film. What a lovely write up. I'd certainly give you more than 8 points and wouldn't think if you could have done better. Allow me to retort on certain remarks you made above. 1) Almost half a century's filmmaking career has to have some average movies when the standard is set up so high by the filmmaker himself. One may have the latitude to call them ludicrous but then a question arises that how does he comprehend cinema. Is it only a form of entertainment or bears a greater responsibility in a social system. I'd assume you partake in the former as you expected a film with great outdoor shots with delineation of Mughal extravaganza. Then why only the architectures? He should have shown the elaborate Mughal's gastronomy or the brevity and competence of the Mughal warriors. One may hold pornography much higher than any nonsense art film. That's his choice of being entertained. Ray chose to emphasise on the fact of the sheer ignorance of the chess players on the ongoing issues of taking over Oudh and the poet philosopher Wazed Ali Shah's incompetence as a ruler and his indulgence of living a life of a fairytale with no worry and thousand kepts. 2) This film sets an example of script writing and direction. The story telling and narrating part is sans pareil. Ray learnt Urdu/Hindi just for writing the script. There are thousands available movies on internet based on Mughal's era but none of them can match this masterpiece. You can take Mughal e azam or TajMahal's name but then again it would be a choice of filmwatching and entertainment. 3) The dwell between the chessplayers in the end of the cinema defines the brilliance of Ray as a filmmaker. It was, indeed very important to set the location in such a parish just to bring out the contrast between the megalomaniac ignorant Jagirdars who only cared for the game of chess and the inevitable intrution of British force. Kallu, a poor chap divulging the news of British troop marching in doesn't refrain the Jagirdars from playing a session of chess. It shows their penchant for the game and can go to any extent to do so. They'd certainly not choose any majestic buildings with hundreds of intruding eyes to blunder even a move in the game. We can leave out the "mountains, trees, gardens, sky, snow and fog, accompanied with melodious songs" to our great bollywood filmmakers and they do it really well everytime they make a film. Ray, Ghatak and the like are noway close to them. But if we are taking about Cinema as a means of communication, I'm blessed that these people were born and made cinema a medium of awareness and wisdom.

Yep and I like the original ending of the story better. The two leads didn't lack in bravery and skills but were too focused on their personal games to see the big picture. They were not stupid either but their self indulgence made them blind to other little games being played around them in their own home too. ..... Them drawing sword over the game and fighting unto death over it instead of the sovereignty of their state and ignoring their duty towards the Nawab was a nice metaphor. It makes the story relevant even today's India, if only people pay attention.

Please don't call this movie a Bollywood movie. Before the 2000s, the word Bollywood didn't even exist. Bollywood is a highly derogatory term. Americans and Europeans laugh at us for naming our films Bollywood films. They say: "Look at these Indians. They are so influenced and carried away by the superiority of Hollywood films that they have have renamed the entire Hindi film industry as Bollywood ! " It's terribly sad to see youngsters of India calling Shatranj ke Khilari, or Pyaasa, or Garam Hawa, as Bollywood films !

Read any film magazine before the 2000s, and you'll find Shatranj Ke Khiladi, or Mughal-e-Azam, or Ganga Jamuna for that matter (whose dialogues were mostly in Awadhi dialect), being referred to as plain Hindi films. It is as simple as that. All I am saying is: Call Shatranj Ke Khiladi by any suitable name, except that derogatory term 'Bollywood'. Call it a multilingual Indian film, or just Hindi film, as it had been known for so many years. But don’t call them 'Bollywood' films, for God’s sake. Classic Indian films such as Do Bigha Zameen, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Garam Hawa, Pyaasa, Ankur, Junoon, Mirch Masala etc. are very Indian in their theme and treatment. These films are like remarkable visual documents of pre- and post-independent India. Hollywood has nothing to do either in the making of these films or in their enduring popularity among Indian masses. So, suddenly calling them ‘Bollywood movies’ not only belittles their worth but also exposes to the world our subservient fascination for Hollywood.

I have watched pather panchali, aparajito, apur sangsar, tin kanya, charulata, ghore baire,nayak, devi, sadgati, ashani sanket,abhijan, parash pathar, mahapurush, gupi gain bagha bain, hirak rajar deshe, pratidwandhi, seemabaddha, jana aranya, aranyer dinratri,agantuk, fatikchand, shakha proshakha, gupi bagha fire elo, chiriyakhana, sonar kella, joy baba felunath, ganashatru, two...now watching shatranj ke khilari...4 more films I have decided to watch in near future kanchanjangha, sikkim, jalsaghar, mahanagar....if you have watched all these then suggest me some more Ray films to watch.....and by the way though all the above films were versatile & magnificent in their own way, "seemabaddha" was the best ray film in my eyes
