Child poverty. Rising inequality. The cost-of-living crisis. Is there any reason to hold out hope for Britain? Are there any solutions to the mess the UK is in? Danny Dorling talks about his latest book, Shattered Nation: Inequality and the Geography of a Failing State, at the Wanstead Tap in London.
This talk took place on 4 October 2023, the 87th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, when Jews, Irish, communists and other working-class residents of Cable Street in London's East End resisted an attempt by Oswald Moseley's fascist blackshirts to march through the area, accompanied by the police. In honour of the anniversary, Danny tells the audience he has opted not to wear his customary dark shirt, and has opted instead for one with an uncharacteristically loud pattern for a geographer.
