There's a fan theory that when Shaun and his friends run into the identical party of survivors lead by his old friend, the other group is actually the cast of the serious, higher-budget zombie movie taking place at the same time. :)

@@jmhaces I hear people say this a lot, but I honestly think the third is WILDLY underrated. HotFuzz is probably still my favourite of the three, but Worlds End doesnt get anywhere near the love it should. It is by far the most emotional of the three, with the subplot around alcoholism, depression and just growing up generally.

So of course everyone's going to recommend Hot Fuzz and The World's End (rightly so) but the series Spaced doesn't get any love from reactors, which is odd, because it's what Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright did before Shaun of the Dead, and is a hilarious cult classic series of two 7 episode seasons. Maybe Spaced will get a spot in the polls after the Cornetto trilogy?

Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes who plays Yvonne who saves the day at the end co-wrote and starred a UK comedy series called 'Spaced' directed by Edgar Wright. One episode featured Simon Pegg's character hallucinating after playing Resident Evil 2. It was this episode that inspired him to write this. A lot of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced who heeded the call on a Fan Newsgroup to come and play roles for free in order to keep in budget.

Such a brilliantly constructed film. All the foreshadowing, setup, and payoff. Like how EVERY detail in that first walk to the corner shop is beat-for-beat reflected later once the zombie apocalypse has started. Kid's football is bloody, jogger is hauling ass, windshield the guy was washing is now smashed, the neighbor leaving his apartment is now lying dead on the doormat, etc. Hot Fuzz is also great, but a little bit less "horror."
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
Eh, Hot Fuzz is pretty horror. Crime horror, but horror. Lower body count than here, true, but they still go for it in some of the scenes. I certainly would agree that it's not more horror than Sean. There's also call-backs between the Cornetto films; witness the fence scene in this movie, and the one in Hot Fuzz.

Something to watch for in the entire Cornetto trilogy is the fact that they're all deconstructions of various genres. About half or so of the movie plays with the tropes and foibles, and the other half is all those tropes and foibles done right. It's insanely impressive, like watching someone disassemble and reassemble an F1 motor and then drive it to the chequered flag. Wright et al are next level. Sean's tall room-mate is the inimitable Peter Seranfinowicz, who was Andy's rich friend in the London episode of Parks & Rec, and, more recently, one of the best parts of the sadly-cancelled reboot of The Tick, which is absolutely worth seeing.

Ed laid out the whole movie “We’ll have a Bloody Mary first thing [they kill a zombie named Mary in the backyard], a bite at the King’s Head [Shaun’s stepdad Phillip gets bitten in the head], couple at the Little Princess [they pick up Liz, David, and Dianne], stagger back here [imitating the zombies to get through a horde and reach the Winchester], and bang, back at the bar for shots [they use the pub’s Winchester rifle to shoot the zombies].”

The standard of writing and directing is unbelievably high. Everything has a pre and post zombie meaning. The reuse of scenes and dialog is amazing. They even made the flowers relevant to the story. Shaun's arc is brilliant the way he goes from a waste of space to a well rounded man is great to watch. Never mind the attention to detail with continuity is on point. Plus Ed reveals the entire plot in his speech to cheer up Shaun. I would highly recommend watching CinemaWins video on Shaun of the Dead it's great. But surprisingly there is another comedic zombie movie I’d love to recommend that isnt super scary but maybe some turn the head to gore scenes that I’d imagine Mary to do (which is fine in my books. One I would suggest checking out is a Canadian zombie-comedy called "Fido". It is a little older than this (mid 90's if I remember correctly), but is one of my favourates. As a side note, "We are coming to get you, Barbara" is the best line in the movie! Wonderful homage! You can really see why this was Romero's favourate zombie movie that he didn't make.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
It's insane to think that Romero basically invented everything we think of for modern zombies. Slow-moving, flesh-craving, having to destroy the brain; all of it from one guy. Everyone knows what a zombie is now, but nobody did (in that sense) before Romero made it so. He is to zombies what Bram Stoker is to vampires.

Yes, "Hot Fuzz" is the best in my opinion, from this same group. Just wanted to add in my vote.

Awesome movie. A favourite along with Hot Fuzz. Hot Fuzz is by the same team but no zombies this time. It’s great.

“He’s not my boyfriend […] Thanks, babe 😍” is a joke from Spaced and also pretty much Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s IRL relationship lol

Bill Nighy (the actor you recognize from the back) is a favourite of mine, I recommend you try the romantic comedy-drama "About Time" from 2017

I've seen Spaced being promoted in the comments, so I'll just agree with that one. Another great British comedy TV-series is Black Books (Channel 4, three seasons of six episodes each, 2000-2004). All episodes are, or have been, up on KZbin for ages, so they aren't super eager to take it down. That can be good to know. ;)

Yes, dogs can look up but their necks do not have the same range of motion as ours so they won't be looking straight up, however if you ask a dog to sit and look up at a treat then you can see that they can look up at you.

Lots of people here recommending 'Spaced' (TV series), another British TV series I'd recommend is 'Big Train', also featuring Simon Pegg - it's a surreal sketch show and very funny. It was written by the same team who wrote 'Father Ted', another brilliant show.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a good horror comedy that makes fun of the slasher horror genre.

There is also Tucker and Dale ARE evil, the same movie but from the college kids perspective, and it really does look like Tucker and Dale ARE serial killers.
