Thermal stress is one thing that causes hair to get split ends. When you soak the brush and rub it on the towel you are rubbing off an outer protective layer and when its gone the hairs are prone to splitting. If you add some heat that will help this process. If you use a hair dryer on a hot setting to dry the brush after rubbing it on the towel it will help to create split ends.

My 830 is in the fridge right now. I'm going to try working the bristles each day for an hour though rather than leaving it for 2 full days before working them. - 2 days later. I pulled the brush out each morning and evening and worked the brush on a towel over my knee and with my fingers for about an 30min till the brush was dry. The brush was then placed back into the water to sit for another 8-12 hours. Majority of the hairs have now spit and curled and the bush feels wonderfully soft. I have even noticed a few hairs that have split 3-4 times. This is a great way to kick start breaking in your brush and I believe that the repeated wetting and drying cycle I used accelerated this even further. I may try this again over a weekend with another brush where I can get the wet/dry cycle to every 4 hours during the day to see if that accelerates the splitting more.

Ok, I’m on day 2 of breaking in my first shaving brush, a badger. Today, this morning, I found the brush had dried overnight, after its first vigorous scrubbing with hand soap. It had foamed up nicely. Turns out it was good old Ivory soap. The dry brush had a faint smell, as expected, but less than yesterday. Today, I put the brush in a small tumbler, added tepid water to cover most of the bristles. Added a few drops of Dawn, a surfactant which reduces water’s surface tension and helps foaming it seems. The old Ivory made silky smooth foam, lots of it. I did this a second time, then a good rinse. While wet, I gave it a whiff and was pleased. About half, I judge. Not bad for day 2, and after drying on a towel, the knot was spread out nicely and some evidence of end splitting. I’m in no hurry, a few more days of the Dawn treatment should do the trick.

Broke in a Semogue in one day to reach 90% of the result by lathering and letting it sit. I was amazed at how fast it went!

I've done similarly with my boar brushes, but I mixed a cup of pure filtered water, with a tablespoonful of borax. and a tablespoon full of Purell laundry detergent. I left the brush in the refrigerator for a day, completely rinsed it out and did it the same over for three days, rinsing it each time and after the last time i rinsed it squeezed it with a terry cloth towel, and with the same towel i rubbed the bristle tips, until they split after drying it was ready to lather with. It had no bad smell, and the tips were soft.

Jill Snoddon my 1305 broke in without going through any process but just using it 3 times per week for 1/2 month at most. My 1305 is my very best bush, actually it’s all anyone would ever need. That said I just purchased a 610 in Ferrari red un-dyed I am trusting it reaches the level of my 1305. It’s just me but I like the organic process of breaking in a brush, I want my shave cream plus my face to break it in, again that’s just me.

It took no time at all for mine to break in using this method. Then before I even used them to shave, I did a hand lather every day and a rubout and got marvelous results in less than 2 weeks. I now have two different badger brushes on the way.
