Shawn reminds me a lot of Simone Biles in that she capitalized on the difficulty of her COP but still maintained great execution and consistency on all events. She was rock solid on beam every time.

I had not seen her gymnastics for a long time and it was impressive to go back and watch and look closely. She reminds me of Simon as well. They both do powerful and exciting gymnastics.

Double twist double layout dismount bar is named after Elise Ray. She did compete it at 2000 sydney Olympic. Gymnast that compete it Elise Ray, Shawn Johnson, Jordyn Weiber, Tan Jiaxin, Wang Yan

Rock on and thanks. I wish there were more gymnastics doing this dismount. I know its hard but really cool.

@@OLYMPIANTEACHES-bh6gp yeah. Not so many gymnast did that dismount now as it is G rated. One of the most difficult dismount in women gymnastics. Wang Yan did it last in 2017 if not mistaken. And after that, I'm not so sure any other gymnast did that. Surprisingly, Jordyn Weiber did it back in 2009 at the American Cup when she was 13 years old.

I’m pretty sure I heard Vanessa Atler say in a podcast that she did this dismount.

I thought Jordan Weiber did a full twisting double layout dismount, not double double. (Either way that’s still amazing and extremely difficult) I could be wrong though, I just know she did a full at the Olympics

Behind the 96 WAG Olympic team, the 2008 WAG Olympic team is my favorite. Shawn and Nastia were AMAZING! They both had different gymnastics, but they were always neck in neck. It was a great time to see them competing together!

In case nobody noticed she did a front full with a left twist and a Rudy with a right twist. This shows that she learned a Barani opposite her dominant twisting direction. That Barani led to her front full being a left twist as well. It's astonishing that she learned a Rudy her correct direction.

Haha. Yes. I know a few gymnast that are like this. 2008 Olympian, Joey Haggerty and one of my best friends does this as well. It is interesting why we circle on Palmhurst the direction we do or twist one way front word and a different way backward sometimes.great observation and thanks for the insight. All my best.

Nastia won that Olympic AA in 08 but Shawn won it at Worlds the year prior. I think a lot of people forget that.

Yes, shawn was always regarded as the favorite, but Nastia did beat her at the Olympics and it was an exciting final. Nastiest was a surprise win, but they were both phenomenal gymnast in their own styles.

@@reneepeters3045 I think they were the first, yes. In 2012 Gabby won, and the Russian team got silver and bronze with Komova and Mustafina, and Mustafina barely edged out Raisman for the bronze. Then in 2016 I believe Simone got gold and Raisman silver, and she edged out Mustafina for that silver, and Mustafina took bronze. In 2016 Shang Chungsong from China was 4th and she has a pretty interesting back story, coming from a very poor upbringing in China. She's been an underappreciated gymnast from China, IMO. She was quite good.

I realize I'm biased because she's an American, but I see her 2008 beam final as the best ever. Even trying to cast off that bias as well as I can, I still see it as the best ever. So many gymnasts seem to want to break the beam as they come down, and she seems to just set herself down on it smoothly. It comes off to me like a whole new level of precision and skill, as if she's working with the beam, not on the beam.

When I watch her 2008 visa championships beam routine, I dont even see a micro adjustment through her entire routine and I don't think she could have done that routine better on the regular floor. The only noticeable error is a step forward on the dismount. Here is the link to that routine. I cant recall a routine that is done more solidly. Really great stuff. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpa7lX6EhNqoatksi=ar1wjyfrPZikUHxL

Great analysis - many thanks from a Shawn fan! Could you possibly analyze Carly Patterson’s beam routine(s) from the 2004 Olympics? I’m in awe of how she made such soft landings (in contrast to Shawn’s more aggressive style, which I also love).

Yes it’s true that each generation generally gets better and I agree Simone is the greatest women’s gymnast in history. I am a fan of any gymnast that is at the top of their generation. Shawn was partly great because of gymnast like Shannon Miller and Kim Zmeskal.. Simone is partly great because of people like that came before her. The greats that come in future generations will in great part be because of Simone Biles and a collection of generations of evolution of gymnastics. I just think that’s so cool. Nice to meet you as well and thank you for your message.
