It's because they were modeled after Cory and Shawn. Cory and Shawn needed each other growing up too - it's why Shawn didn't turn into a criminal, because Cory was there to pull him back, and Cory allowed Shawn to be open to the other people in his life that also helped pull him back from that life. Riley does the same thing for Maya - introduces her to the right people who will put her on a path that is not self-destructive. But Cory and Shawn learned how to survive without each other, and Maya and Riley will too (if the show were still on).

You know how Shawn was still able to love Katy despite reuniting with Angela, indicating closure? Well it really speaks to me. I had a crush on a schoolmate in college for about two years, including when quarantine took over. It took so long to ask her if she'd like to catch up over Starbucks sometime. Well, it didn't happen, because I learned she was engaged. That's when I decided to try and move on. Well, I mostly managed it, I guess, but...I discovered the wedding reception I'm serving this Saturday is hers and her current fiancé's. What will it be like to see her, especially if she looks really beautiful in her dress? Will I feel pain when seeing her with the groom? I guess I didn't fully move on from her. I don't know. Is it possible I will experience good, well-needed closure during the reception?

Oh, I moved on from her. Totally. There is bad news though. l had to end my dream to be with another woman. She used to work at the bakery I go to a lot, and we chatted and connected so many times. On her last day, she said my coffee was on her. One day, I ran into her at the bar. We chatted, and when she and her friends were singing karaoke, she gestured me toward them and pointed to the lyrics on the screen. What's funny is I had told her I didn't like being in the spotlight, so I was wondering about her motive, perspective, and if it could've meant something. But then, a few months or so later, I saw her at a club. I pretended I didn't see her in the dancing crowd, she noticed me (I think after I accidentally bumped into her), put her hand on my arm to get my attention, and said hi. It was a very brief talk, given the dancing and loudness. So of course, I did not ask for her number. But it's not just that. She was with a group of friends, and one of them was a guy she talked with. Weeks later, I saw her at the club again, I think with the same guy. She introduced him to me (though she couldn’t remember my name, so I had to remind her) and he and I shook hands. I can’t know for a fact if he’s her boyfriend, and I don’t THINK she said he was. If he is, though, I’m glad I didn’t ask for her number. I might have saw them together at the bakery, as customers. I didn't get a good look at her, nor say hi; I was too bummed about who I thought it was and the likeliness of her being taken. I think I have to move on.

The best part of this show for me was seeing Shawn finally get his happy ending. Not everyone has the Cory Topanga lifelong bond. Not every family starts the same. If Shawn had ended up with Angela the show would've lied to itself telling everyone that the fairy tale always comes true. Sometimes it's not the fairy tale you'd imagined for yourself, it's the one you didn't know you needed until you can't live without it.

I feel Riley and Maya and how they felt. I'm now 60 years old and I don't know what unconditional love is and I don't trust. I push people away from me because I don't want them to feel what I've been through or take it out on them it wasn't not anyone's fault and now I am labeled and judged for my mental disorders and I'm ghosted and ignored if you could really live in my shoes or someone else's shoes who deal with mental disorders like I do just for one week I don't think you would make it. We are beautiful people who need love and respect not labeled and judged and stereotype and stigmatize. Most people tend to live in the norm of being so civilized and privileged and self absorbed that they look at us for our mental disorders not as people who have beautiful hearts. We live in a world that only sees the object not the solution. I hope one day it will change for me and everyone else who deals with mental health issues.
