I just subscribed❤ I want to become a music therapist. (I'm going into my junior year in highschool) is it true you have to know how to play an instrument for music therapy? could you maybe tell me a little more about it? thanks so much in advanced if you could tell me more about it😊

yes. a music therapy degree is a bachelor of arts degree. Meaning you will be a music major. You will have to audition on a instrument (voice is also an instrument) and get into the school of music to be accepted into the program. It is NOT an easy major! Just a warning. It is essentially a music degree and a psychology degree. Its on average around 10-15 classes a semester and whatever free time you have, you spend in a practice room learning how to play guitar, piano, and singing. Its extremely rewarding and the best decision I ever made, but its not one to take lightly. You have to really love music to make it through all 4 years (5 including the 1,200 hour internship requirement). I really do hope you try it! There are only 6000 music therapist in the US right now. We are in high demand and there are so few of us to go around!

Its been my dream to become a music therapist since I found out about music therapy. So do you only need to have one instrument in order to audition? And is singing considered the one instrument or do you need voice plus the instrument? I definitely understand that it isn't an easy major because music and phychology both take a lot of work and practice. I'm trying to learn how to play piano and ukulele but am not expert (audition ready) on either instrument, but I've been working on singing since I was in 4th grade. Like i said its my dream to become one. +Sierra Lynn yup! You only need one primary instrument. I auditions on piano. I barely made it knot JMUs music program even though I've been taking piano lessons since 4th grade 😅. In the program you will have to take voice, piano, and guitar lessons. It'd be hard to pass any college audition without proper music training. If you don't have a teacher yet, I recommend getting one. For any good music school you will probably need to play 2-3 pieces from 2-3 different musical eras. One almost always has to be from the baroque era. You will also need to play scales and sight read. This is probably also true for voice. And that's just for the music program. You also have to get into the music therapy program which usually has you play and sing something. Look up the college you are interested in and find out the audition requirements and if they have a music therapy major before hand. Good luck! I really hope you get to major in music therapy! .

Sorry to be up front - typical Deaf culture. But THIS is not ASL. This is just English signs put together. Maybe you could work on signing the concepts versus word for word interpreting. ASL is a visual language, if you don't interpret the song to make it like a picture, then you're just signing for hearing people's pleasure and not to reach the Deaf Community.
