It was probably a combination of his immense natural ability and the fact that when you are a chronic substance abuser -- a really bad one -- you can be fairly drunk or high and not really show it at all. It just becomes a feeling of 'a more relaxed normal' rather than a feeling of 'intoxicated'. Don't ask me how I know that.

Shawn was also a functional addict. He had a serious problem for years and lots of people in the business didn't know the extent of it because he was functional. It was only during his run as commissioner in 2000-2002 where he finally lost control and became a dysfunctional addict.

Michael Burke almost anything from 1995 until after his stint as commissioner in 99-00. The joke was that he and Hall/ Nash used to time their matches based on when the pills wore off.

No, never after he returned in 2002. He had turned his life around by then. He was messed up a lot during the time of the Rockers in 1988.... and in 2000-02 when he was the Commissioner. He was so messed up drunk and drugged, that they had to drag him to the ring... he managed to get his segment done... then back stage, Vince sent him home and told him not to come back till he got himself straightened out. He was lying on the couch at home one night, his son Cameron who was 2 at the time was climbing over him and realized he couldn't care for his son. The next morning, he asked is wife where the cookies were, she told him you and Cameron ate them all last night. When Shawn realized how much he was messing up his son's life, he quit... cold turkey that morning. He has been stone cold sober ever since... and found his religion shortly after that.
