Joey had this energy back when kendrick did control, but now is a different moment and time in his career and in hip hop, i think he needs to work more on developing his career and expanding his reach to get into the top tier conversation again

@@mateuszbudniak2802 yes, didn't mean to say he didn't have that energy back then, but that it was in fact appropriate at the time, and now things are so different. In my opinion, his career didn't develop enough to put him in the goat conversation, but that's arguable. Mind you ive been a fan since 1999 dropped

@@sawlty-suite5131 to me he was, honestly back in 2015 when b.4.da.$$ dropped I thought joey was the best rapper of his generation at least, (he was so young back then). not all time but on the way to become one (but you could argue that was just my hype). his career took a different path though.

Exactly, a lot people are ruining hiphop for me personally. Everyone getting emotional over everything now and daze. This diss track doesn’t make Joey BadA$$ a hater. He is a competitor. Kendrick is my 3 favorite rapper of all time after Pac and Nas. But I’m not going to get emotional because he came at one of my favorite artists. These blogs and mediators seem to always choose sides or nitpick when it best suits their narrative. If you are a critic you are supposed to be neutral and unbiased. We all have different views but some people just be meat riding.

Joey’s nice, used to be one of my favs but I feel like he lost his momentum musically. He was busy getting to bigger bags, I ain’t mad at it, but it comes with sacrifice, he can’t force himself into that GOAT of his generation convo. 1999 is a classic, all his albums are good, but, like Shawn said, he isn’t polarizing enough, he’s just really good.
@ThirdEyeRap

Yeah Joey has always had a pretty big ego and I think that’s part of the reason he thought he could take such a big break from music early on in the first place. He thought what he did pre 2017 was enough and it simply wasn’t. Even 2000 didn’t make the waves it should’ve if he wants to be considered a big dog like Kendrick.

100% agreed, the concept of a Joey/Kendrick beef just isn't really realistic, even if I think it could be interesting in a perfect world. Joey just isn't polarizing enough to engage with people in the mainstream consciousness, even if he could have at one point, maybe if he stayed on the path he forged on All Amerikkkan Badass. Big shade to anyone trying to dismiss his entire catalogue tho, this man has multiple great albums under his belt.

Rap battles exist. Sports teams can have rivalries and produce great matches, while the individual players don't have beef with the opposition. They are both top lyrical masters, they have solid albums, they care about the culture, etc. but people still sleep on them. @@Ismael-kc3ry that's what makes this whole situation low-key sad.....Lupe has been too much of a try-hard in trying to get Kendricks attention. He should have kept to the bars instead of going online to explain himself - bro you don't need to explain shit to Twitter or the interviewer. Tho I guess another thing is that Lupe just doesn't even come close to the level of engagement that Kendrick gets from both critics and listeners - he could drop SLR 4 and broil and flambe and grill Kendricks entire career like Bubba Gump shrimp....but people will still deem Kendrick the winner just because. Especially post-beef, Kendrick stans have become unbearable, and I love Kendrick. My opinion, but I think Lupe is one of the greatest lyricists to have ever touched a mic and I do think he's better than Kendrick in constructing verses and the like, whereas Kendrick is a superior songwriter and artist. And I genuinely do believe that Lupe could put out a diss track that could crush Kendrick if he really wanted to - remember what he did to Royce Da 5'9? Unlike the Drake vs Kendrick beef, it wouldn't be one-sided. But yeah, rn this is just a sad state of affairs....

definitely some direct allusions to the beef and indirect allusions to Kendrick, but nothing here really sounds like an actual diss. a challenge, maybe, but if it is one, it’s directed at the East Coast more than anything else. like “the West is having its moment, we need to step up and i’m gonna lead the charge.” this is not the direct, opening salvo that Like That was. it sounds more like someone who’s out for the respect that he deserves (and i can’t say he doesn’t, he’s incredibly talented). i know a lot of people want to see great MCs going at it, but this isn’t gonna be the track to start it. that said, if for any reason this thing escalates, Kendrick vs Joey would be a hell of a lot closer than the Drake beef was. Joey is respected by hip hop heads and doesn’t have the obvious character issues that Drake has. to be clear, he does NOT have the capacity to destroy Kendrick, but Joey would have a much better chance of surviving it with his respect intact.
