Something that has worked for me has been just focusing on keeping my hands tight around the pole. Small pole, grip it and rip it. This got me out of a week long funk with 2 practices and one comp. Only took 3 jumps up the whole time!

I find that 90% of the time a kid is running through it's because the pole is to big or their step is to far away. Also that practice creates habits so it's better to plant a pole that is to small 10 times in a row then plant a big pole 3 out of 10 times. Most kids will defensively say it's not the pole but put a small enough pole in someones hands with a low enough grip and they will almost always take off!

Hey, Shawn. I watched this video for some pole vaulting advice, but I'm still really struggling. I have been vaulting for about three years now. My second year I had an accident where I attempted an 11' jump, but bailed out of the vault halfway through and ended up landing in the box and hurting my ankle for a couple weeks. It's been over a year now, and I'm still too scared to attempt a full 7 step run-through while holding at the top my pole(14' 150) at practice. However, at a track meet, I'm able to do full run-throughs while holding my pole nearly at the top. My coaches have been telling me for over year now that with my speed, I could easily get over 13'. But without any real attempts at practice, I'm not getting any better. Is there any additional advice you can give?

What helped me get past persistent run throughs was constantly focusing on my plant. Every single vault I take I focus on planting the pole in the box, then on everything else. It's gotten to where I don't need to think about planting anymore but every time I have a hard time with takeoffs putting loads of attention on getting the tip of the pole into the box solves it. If you're afraid your grip is going to slip then try using pine sap to stick your hands to the pole, or re-tape the pole extremely badly so the tape is full of ridges and ultra grippy, then chalk up.

What if you run through because your brain is broken and no matter what pole-step-run you’re on it won’t work?

How do you teach a brand new vaulter that the pads are your friends not enemies
@ShawnFrancis194 жыл бұрын
I recommend hugging the pads before each practice. That way your friend will see that the mats are friendly

Im sorry,but does running through mean that you run but you stop and you dont jump? Because that is a problem i have
@ShawnFrancis197 жыл бұрын
No need to be sorry. Running through means at the very last second you plant the pole but let it slide between your hands and you run onto the pit. Id say, no matter what never stop once you start your run. Make it a habit that you always make it to the box. If you get into the habit of stopping on the runway you'll have a really hard habit to break

I'll apologize in advance, but can I please suggest not saying "no matter what?" I broke both arms taking off about 2' outside, and getting sling-shotted out onto the track. I KNEW I was outside, and it didn't feel right, but this "take off anyway" mentality was stuck in my head. I did continue vaulting through college after I was told I never would be able to. I am now coaching, and tell athletes "If it really doesn't feel right, don't take off." Though yes, many athletes do this excessively when they've already measured their step on. I like to make them do run-backs to check steps and lots of sliding box drills to gain consistency. Thanks for offering so much assistance to the PV community!

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't mean take every jump up off the ground. There are 2 kinds of aborts, (1) is stopping on the runway and (2) is running through allowing the pole to slide between your hands. I'd much rather have a kid get to the box and abort with their arms above their head than stop on the runway. We want to avoid both and it seems the only effective way to do this is with a good knowledgeable coach. Thanks for the suggestion as the meaning can be lost in language.
