@@dexterweb : Agreed. I noticed as well. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but starting at 14:25, body language, lack of eye contact, carefully searching for the right wording, speaking of 'man cave' & modern features (that he doesn't seem thrilled about), etc..... seems to affirm your observation. A precarious situation, to be sure! 'Course I'm old, what do I know ??

@Snow Angel KZbin has lots of videos on quilting I would start there. I originally taught myself from reading books long before the internet. When you said they use sewing machines at the local classes are they using the machines to piece the tops? I sew my tops by machine and then I hand quilt it. You should go to a class and check it out. They may be able to help you get started. Also check to see if your area has any quilt groups, try posting on Facebook to see if anyone knows of a local quilt group.

I've been in the midst of finally getting my own house sold, so you & your wife have my deep sympathies on the cleaning & clearing out, the downsizing, the choosing (sometimes all too rapidly) through what to keep and what to sell or donate. With that said...I think it's both brave and wonderful of you to open up about these things. You're leading by example. You clearly feel there is nothing wrong, and everything right, with being able to change plans, make compromises, and have a close, loving, and utterly healthy relationship between two people who aren't identical in tastes and needs (since it's healthy to have your own interests as well as common interests with your beloved). That's a really good role model for other relationships to emulate, even if the actual details will be different in their own lives. You're both willing to try, both willing to bend a little, and both willing to realize that these things make you stronger, not weaker, as a couple. And you, Shawn, are exemplary in your emotional strength, being willing to share these things for the sake of others.

With over 1 million subscribers, the overwhelming majority of whom like you almost as much as Cali, you're going to eventually have to say "please, no more gifts". People are generally wonderful, and very giving when the feel a connection, but many do not understand that "lots of stuff" is one of the things about modern life you are trying to escape. You are a terrific guy, Shawn, and I know you'll likely never do that to people, so you had better make the next project the Log Cabin Museum and Storage Facility. About 50' by 30' should do it, with a 12/12 roof pitch to support a South facing solar panel array which will make NASA proud. I estimate that will keep you busy for at least the next 2 1/2 years, and I doubt anyone would criticize you if you went with timber framing instead of the solid logs. God Bless you and your family, and Good luck with the empty nest situation.

@Tony Lopez what exactly is your problem? Why are you even on this ch.? Are you illegal & finding it quite difficult to hide & prosper? Or do you just not like your life & the poor choices you have made? These reasons, or any other, do NOT give you the right to verbally abuse others (whom you do not even know!). You must be extremely dissatisfied & unhappy with your own life. Everyone can tell by what you are spewing out of that vile mouth of yours. If you can only reply with venom flowing thru your teeth, veins, why do you watch it? We dont like your vibes or jealousy, so pls stay off this ch or at least refrain from sharing your toxicity b/c we DO NOT want to hear it! We come here to share a part of this man's quiet, simple & beautiful life along with his family when he choses to share. So please, people like you do not belong here. You mentioned God but He is far from your heart b/c..."As a man thinkith in his heart, so is he; for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks." Prov 23:7. Go find a devils ch to spread your negativity & venom. I am sure if you look long enough, you will find one. But it is NOT here! Or better yet give your heart to the Lord Jesus! A very heartfelt video, Shawn. I don’t know how long I have followed, but have found great solace in all of this as I miss the cold snowy winters of Michigan, forests and lakes and the smell of the pines and other things too numerous to mention. Of course viewers know you don’t film everything about your life, but I have been concerned for awhile about the adjustment for both you and your wife as she comes into what essentially had been your space. For most women making a home is part of her DNA and it will interesting to see how this plays out. Also leaving a more social life in town may be a relief or it could leave a great void. It sounds like you have both learned the art of being thoughtful and supportive of one another and I trust you will find a way to navigate these new waters. The gifts you were sent are very touching and indicative of how these channels touch people. A friend used make beautiful quilts and I know the one sent to you must have taken countless hours. A lovely and thoughtful gift. Blessings to you, Shawn, your wife, and Cali.

To find out where one’s passion (outside what we do because of the business of living) it helps to reflect on what one did as a kid, when given the choice - say after school. With that said, there is probably a way to augment your property to support your wife’s, maybe yet undiscovered passion. For example, would the wife like an art or craft studio, a gathering place for women in your area, a place to play music, or maybe a personal library. Looking upon the changes as a unique and great opportunity to attend to a passion, instead of, or in contrast to what is being given up (creature features) seems to be the way to go. I for one as a ceramics (Potter) would love to play with every aspect of the art, whether it be building ones own kiln all the way to digging ones own clay and even sorting through natural events to make glazes. Or, maybe your wife would like to become a herbalist, or who knows what? The point is, there is so much opportunity ahead for her there. Hope you both capitalize on a cross section of opportunities you have and haven’t even considered yet. That said, for every age and mindset, this has got to be the best channel on KZbin. It surely gives so many a place to go to for relief from the complexities and hassles of life. And, who doesn’t love nature, building a dream, the peace that comes through your channel - AND Callie? Yup, you might have to build an art, music, craft or some other studio, and maybe sooner than you think. 😂

Hey Shawn, I watched this video yesterday and as I was out working on my place today I was thinking about what you shared. First, I would not ever suggest that you should do what I suggest if it does not meet your dreams for your life. Not that I believe you would take another's opinion above your own. Especially when it comes to your venture there. Let me just share a couple thoughts. I first moved to my land and started to build my home in the mountains 20 years ago. I was still working full-time and only retired a couple years ago. For the first 10 years I lived with only oil lamps for lighting. I was perfectly happy with the lamps, but 10 years ago I put in solar. And I don't regret it. I have 6 -- 45 watt poly-crystalline panels with a 48 volt inverter. I have no problem running my refrigerator and all my other electrical needs. In fact I have just put up a small guest cabin and rather than putting in a whole new system I am running the the small cabin off the same system. As for the conveniences of indoor bath, toilet, running water, and other; I would say do it.... I am assuming you would prefer to spend the rest of your life in your cabin. Not only will your wife be more comfortable, so will you as age begins to creep up on you. Believe me, I know what it is like to live with only and outhouse and limited water. In my late teens and early 20's I rented an old farm house that had only an outhouse, and a hand pump in the kitchen. This was in Minnesota. where temps can drop to 20 below (F) and stay there for for over a month in the winter. One can live this way; but even I disliked having to trudge out to the outhouse in the middle of the night. I currently have a 1100 gallon water storage tank and am able, for the most part, to have enough water supply for my needs with a cistern. And my solar system can easily runs a pressure pump. Since I was single when I moved to my land there was no issues with how I chose to live. But there aren't many women who want to rough it. Take my word for it, (lol), even though it doesn't seem to bother guys so much. And since I am still single it still doesn't matter how I live since I am more than happy and comfortable in my small cabin; but I am glad of my small conveniences of electricity, and indoor plumbing. My advice - make you wife comfortable; don't even think about it. Put in indoor plumbing, and electricity, and as you get older and less able to do the things you do now; you will be glad you put in the little conveniences.

Caring for the livestock brings me a pleasurable and rewarding experience. I love being able to raise our own food and living in a cabin style home has been really fun to decorate. Being surrounded with trees and away from the city life has been peaceful and way less stressful. Hopefully in time your wife will feel the same as I do. The sauna hat is a good thing. Your head will heat up faster than the rest of your body. The felt hat insulates it from the heat allowing your core body to heat up without you 'feeling' over heated. That was a thoughtful and good gift. +1 Ricardo

You tried really hard in this video. Good opening, presents, feel good moments and then BAMM ! Sledgehammer to the head. There will be some uncomfortable decisions in your future. You have to look deep down into your own soul and find out what your spirit demands. In the meantime, enjoy the next few years and make lasting memories. A few amenities won’t hurt. You will be old one day and might enjoy some of them.

I have great respect for what you're doing. People really don't appreciate the environment in Canada in the winter. When I was twelve my boy scout group went to Algonquin Park in February to go for our Gold Camp Craft badge. We dug through the snow until we hit soil, and built a lean-to as a shelter/heat reflector. There were 7 of us, and we took turns being awake at night to make sure the others were still alive. Dreadfully cold, and a hell of an environment to not only be in..but to also do the requirements for our badge. We were there only a week, but you never forget that kind of a damp cold. But when those Arctic winds start blowing down from off Jame's Bay, it's another story altogether. All I can say is, your cabin looks mighty accommodating to someone that's felt that cold.

It's so helpful that you are willing to share here, in this way. The thoughts you express in this honest vulnerable episode are very real ones for a lot of us as we transition into the stage of life after those busy child-raising/providing/householder years. Something shifts internally, too, and we begin to reevaluate who we are separate from those roles we so fully inhabited for those years, and also reevaluate who we are now as a couple. Old dreams resurface, alongside new ones. Radical simplifying is often a part of the shedding that takes place for a lot of us in the autumn of our lives, even if we don't take it to the extreme that you did. For myself, it seemed there was a part of me waiting for the time and space to come forth, if that makes sense. It was like a powerful instinct rising in me that now was the time, that change was here. Even if the impetus/stripping seems to be outside of yourself... a career/financial collapse, a forced retirement, children emptying the nest... there is something internal that also pushes your into the next stage of human growth. Of course, the hindus identify this 3rd stage of life, fittingly named the 'forest dweller', as a time of letting go and ripening. I think that's what we're doing. In my marriage, I was the one who longed for the more primitive rustic lifestyle, away from modern culture. My partner does not thrive to the degree that I do 'out there', though he had come along out of love for me. Now, he feels more at home on a wilderness trip than he would've ever imagined, and the intimacy/rhythm that sharing such a extended journey with him fosters has deepened our marriage. I long for more of that, find myself wanting what we have 'out there'. It's still not perhaps what I dream of, but, like you, our marriage has both of us compromising, without feeling compromised, if that makes sense. We too are still a work in progress, evolving, like your cabin perhaps. I don't know where it's heading but I know I want to share it with him, so I keep listening.

I think it is a very thoughtful expression of your love and value for your wife's comfort that you are willing to compromise your original plan for the cabin to have her there with you. I think that life is better when you are able to do it with the one you love even for a loner who enjoys his alone time. What deep value is it if you live your dream without the other half of your heart on a permanent basis? She may catch on more to your passion and be able to share your joy on a deeper level if she is there more. I think you may find you will have more gain from your compromise than you will loss.

Shawn, you built a great cabin in a beautiful wilderness. Watched several of your videos and like them all. As much as I love camping, fishing trips, boating in wilderness, a week trip is all I can handle. How can you or anyone handle being all by yourself, 24/7, day after day, night after night without anyone to talk to (except your dog), what do you do all day when there is 2' of snow on the ground or it's raining for several days straight? We're in the middle of winter here in the Midwest and already have cabin fever, I want to go out, enjoy bike riding or driving my old car etc. I guess it takes a special person to be able to do that. BTW, I've ridden my motorcycle through Barrie and surroundings several times on our trips around the Great Lakes. Great places to visit for sure.

Sounds like Shawn you will need a fold-down bunk bed in the tool shed to let the ice melt on occasions. I live a good life but maybe at 62 anchored to home with a 14-year-old daughter whom I adore and a beautiful wife who even though when I announce I'm heading off on a motorcycle trip with my Harley mates I can tell she is not impressed lets me go anyway. I love her dearly as she is not only my wife but my best friend the one I trust totally and rely upon for almost everything. But life can change in an instant. Two weeks ago I was heading out and as I was stepping out the front door a slipped on a small piece of wet plastic and ended up in an ambulance and hospital for a week with a ruptured quad tendon and three muscle tendons gone. So I'm looking at up to six months of recovery time and now out of work as I was a casual employee. My wife has been my absolute backbone ever since I just don't know how I can ever repay her I am just a lucky man to have her by my side.
