Managing your woodland increases biodiversity as youve said many times Shawn That means cutting trees down which creates areas to allow the forest floor to see light Youve explained many times that taking trees imprives the health of your land. Due to the age of the woodland

I'm just south of you. I'm just about finished building my cabin. The last 5 years I have been seeing it change. When I started developing my 100 acres there was wolf sign, scat, audible howling the first season. Deer sign was rare to non existent. Little moose as well. The last two seasons no wolf sign and deer and moose are more abundant. I know there's a natural range and cycle. I feel for you. It's discouraging. Build it and They will come. I heard that somewhere before :)

There’s a small acorn crop this year here in Arkansas where I live too . We’ve been in a drought since July and the trees have gone dormant early this year . We haven’t had any rain the whole month of October . We’re supposed to get some rain tomorrow the 31st of October . It seems we have a good acorn crop every other year . We had an abundant crop of them last year . You might try fertilizing your big oak trees on your property next spring . We fertilize our fruit trees to make more fruit so it stands to resin that it might work on the oak trees too . I use a corn feeder to attract deer on my place when there’s no acorns . A bag of corn will last a couple of weeks . You might try that on your place . Acorns are higher in protein than corn but if there’s no acorns they’ll come to the corn . I enjoy your videos .

Shawn, I like the forestry management plan for improving oaks production. Are you cutting down competitive species, or girdling them to make removal later easier ? Can you see plot rearing any sapling oaks to largest manageable sizes you could suitably replant ? Perhaps transfer using ATV / skidding or carrying with 2-3 people to suitable areas nearer cabin ?

This shows what you should do, what you could do, and what you might have to do all at once. If it hits the fan, you survive no matter what, knowing how to survive is what it comes down to. If we get to that level of needing it, it's good to know the skills!

the late freeze or frost can cause the lack of acorns on the spring flowering oaks (White Oak), and a hot dry summer affects the acorns on the summer flowering oaks (Red Oak). The weather patterns have a great impact on the acorns in the fall, so you need to look for the warm pocket in your area that was not impacted by the late freeze for white oaks and an area that is extremely wet for Red oaks to find acorns.

@@sandyjuntunen4088 Well - yes, trees need time.. but a bit it depends on the hight you are going to plant, the climate and the way you treat the young plant. As far as I know from the channel of an "ontario - of gridder" a little red oak was growing about a foot or so with lots of water during the warmer months. Planting a 3m oak might bring acorns in 8-12 years or so? What do you think? Would like to try one of our oaks 🙂But as far as I know, our oaks here have more - what do do call it? Acid? Your bow looks a lot like mine. What's your draw weight? Is it a brand name or did you make it? Fr the deer, plant white oaks. They make tastier acorns and the deer keep one eye on them all year long waiting for the mast to fall. Red/black acorn have a ton more tannin in. You pro'lly already know all this but just in case, thought Id share. Like anything else, if last year was a heavy mast year this year will be light. Did you have drought conditions where you are? We were painfully dry this year. You can poke white oak acorns into the ground and they'll sprout up an oak saplings the same year.
