RIP Eric Carmen. We just lost him. He has several hits and was a member of the Raspberries. This song is based on a Rachmaninov piece. He was sued by Rachmaninov’s estate.
@ApricotRse9 ай бұрын
That suit was settled by him giving a simple percentage to the heirs. Unlike most classical artists of centuries ago who have their music reimagined into popular songs, Mr. Rachmaninov died in 1948, so he had contemporary living heirs who should have been rightly compensated.

I agree with everyone here that we lost a very talented person in Eric Carmen. He covered a lot of different styles of music and was a consummate musician. Choosing this piece from Rachmaninoff to put out in an era of Rock music and making it work was genius. Whole album is great.

Shawn, I am glad you played the entire 7+ minute album cut. Back in December 1975 when this song was released by Clive Davis with Arista Records (six months following the successful re-release of Barry Manilow's third Top Ten hit "Could It Be Magic?", based on Frederik Chopin's Prelude in C-minor, Opus 28, Number 20 -- another song, full album cut, which you ought to react to as Manilow's masterpiece), we only got a 4+ minute AM-radio friendly version. Only those who bought Eric's debut album knew of this longer version. As a then 13-year old, I bought the single version. And sadly, we can no longer see Eric Carmen because he just passed away.

Eric Carmen was in the band The Raspberries before going solo, and their sound was more rock. He was the lead singer, and composer of their songs. He also played guitar. I really love his double cut Melody Maker. Apparently, he either gave or sold it to Joan Jett. too bad for me! They had what many consider the first power pop song in the US. It was pretty big, and oh so catchy and good. It was called 'Go All the Way' and he got around the censors by using lyrics where the girl was suggesting that lol! I hope you'll do that one one of these days. I just know more reactors are going to do this specific song when there are so many good ones. I Wanna Be With You, Let's Pretend, Tonight, Overnight Sensation, lots of Raspberries hits. When he went solo, he leaned more towards ballads, and this one was big. The other big solo of his at this time was better (in my opinion) and called Never Gonna Fall in Love Again. I hope you can get into doing more of his. Eric was a musical prodigy. He attended a music academy at the age of 3 I think it was. At one point in his early career (Go All the Way was written when he was 21, and then 4 albums of music followed right away) he had a piano and nothing else in the living room of his apartment. As some have noted, concerto is pronounced differently, but from what the interwebs have to say it seems it should be 'kuhn-*chehr*-tow. Thanks for covering this great singer-songwriter. and performer

When Carmen wrote this song, based on Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, he didn't realize that the music wasn't yet in the public domain. He had to pay Rachmaninoff's estate 12% of the royalties and share credit for the song.

So sad to hear about Eric Carmen's recent passing! He was a great singer, songwriter, guitarist & keyboardist. He was originally with the group "The Raspberries" & they had a few hits with "Go All The Way" "Let's Pretend", "I Wanna Be With You", "Tonight" & "Overnight Sensation. Eric then went solo & had numerous hit songs in the 70's-80's such as "All By Myself", "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again", "She Did It", "That's Rock & Roll", "Hungry Eyes", "Make Me Lose Control", "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips" etc.
@lauraallen559 ай бұрын
Although Eric sampled Rachmaninov's concerto, he composed a good portion of this himself. He was classically trained and a musical prodigy, so had the songwriting ability, especially considering how many songs he wrote. If you like sad songs, his Never Gonna Fall in Love Again is sad, but a bit livelier than this one. I think this is his only song that had the classical feel to it. Interesting lyrics for a 25 year old to write.

Had never previously noticed the "George Harrisonness" of this arrangement. I'm actually more familiar with the Céline Dion cover of it, I think. Had vaguely thought Eric Carmen was Canadian, but he was born in Ohio. Sadly he passed away last week. Quite right about the "classical" comment. Much of this song is based on nineteenth century classical music (Chopin, iirc). (EDIT, Rachmaninoff! There's at least one well known pop song based on a Chopin melody though. Love the Romantic era stuff...)
