I grew up in the 60's/70's and while it was a great time to grow up in, there was A LOT of bad stuff that went on then (the Cold War with the constant threat of nuclear annihilation, the Vietnam War, the assassinations of more political/social justice advocates than any other time in U.S. history, etc). So it's no wonder that those things gave many of us a less than positive outlook for what the future might hold, and bands like CCR gave our generation a voice! I am 68 now, and honestly even with what my generation grew up dealing with, I am grateful to have grown up during those years. Every generation has it's own unique challenges and advantages and music is often the Voice of each generation.

And the never to be forgotten, "'scuze me while I kiss this guy" from "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix. "Mondegreen" is the word for a misheard lyric. Shall we now all sing "Louie Louie"?

American had civil unrest going on in the 60’s with riots in many cities. I remember going with my mom to pick my older brothers up from football practice and a riot had broke out. There was a VW bug on fire in the parking lot and a large mob smashing windows and stuff. This was in Omaha. I think of that with many of these songs from the 60’s, the Vietnam war, race riots and the tremendous cultural changes occurring.

CCR played simple songs, but they were the best! My favorite has always been Green River. Born on the Bayou is also great. Both have that swamp rock sound. Suzie Q is another great one. You have to listen to them all.

Simple, but the rhythm section locked into the groove and never let go. Then John’s vocals on top.

Every time I hear this song I think it's my favorite CCR song. It's such a contradiction between the message and the cheerful sound. The voice of rage and ruin and one eye taken for an eye lines convey the real message in my mind. The natural disaster stuff seems metaphorical.

For decades, many people thought he was singing 'There's a bathroom on the right'. There's a live version of John Fogarty singing this song, and he changes the lyric to that! Must try to find it for you. Edit: Found it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmGZkGN3pd-esLs At 1:58!

At any given time, there's some place in the world that is experiencing rage and ruin and the rest of us live our happy-go-lucky lives, but we're always aware of the 'nasty weather' on the horizon and that disruption of our life as we know it is "just a shot away' (gimme shelter). This and Run Through the Jungle are my favs of theirs.

CCR had a lot of really heavy hitters like that. Someday Never Comes Is a total banger but it packs an emotional wallop like you wouldn't believe until you experience it. And having watched your channel for a long time, I know it would hit you pretty hard. Another favorite of mine in that direction is called Hideaway (Wish I Could). This is a slow song and it is just absolutely beautiful but it has so much grit and soul as well. In this one, the narrator runs across an old friend of his that he hasn't seen as much recently, and as they talk, he slowly begins to realize that his friend has already made up his mind that he's going to take his own life. He tries to help and asks what he can do but in the end he has to resign himself to that helpless sadness. Strange thing is, I just went to a funeral this afternoon for an old friend who is about 6 years younger than me, and when I talked to him last Sunday afternoon a week ago, I knew something was off and I was telling him he should probably go to the hospital. And he acted resigned that he probably wouldn't. And he died two nights later. Everyone was so shocked but in a way not surprised. It was a pretty rough afternoon, I will say that. Creedence is one of those bands, like Lynyrd skynyrd and the Beatles, where I can actually say that I like every song on every album they ever did. It's rare.

I grew up on the great music of the 60's-70's. CCR has always been one of my favorites. John Fogerty has one of the most unique & recognizable voices around. They don't have a bad song! You've done quite a few of them. Huge list of hits! "Proud Mary", "I Put A Spell On You", "Down On The Corner", "Green River", "Lookin' Out My Back Door", "Lodi", "It Came Out Of The Sky", "The Midnight Special", "Travelin' Band", "Run Through The Jungle", "Long As I Can See the Light", "Sweet Hitchhiker" etc.

These guys (and this song) got a lot of air play in Vietnam - there was usually at least one guy in every Infantry squad who was looked to as a prophet-of-sorts, and when he got spooked - everyone got spooked. RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE is another CCR song makes me think of 'Nam, and BORN ON THE BAYOU reminds me of Louisiana and 'Nam.

Lots of their songs are about premonitions of danger or bad things happening. Check out "Sinister Purpose", "Graveyard Train", "Feelin' Blue", "Effigy", "Porterville", "Gloomy", "Run Through the Jungle", "Commotion".

The lyrics are dark, but the music makes you feel like you can keep on keepin' on. That's a description of the blues as an art form.

I always figured that because the music was so bouncy and happy that it was meant to signify that the lyrics were strictly tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken literally. Turns out I had it wrong all along.

Such a paradoxical song. It has a positive, happy melody and a bright, bouncy tempo, but the lyrics are gloomy and, as you said, apocalyptic. It was written, as others have commented, at a turbulent time in America, but when all is said and done, it's still a great-sounding song that brings a smile to your face. Great reaction.

Vietnam. Conflict and anger. People who supported the war no matter what, and people who knew the war was B.S. Poor kids who couldn’t get out of the draft. Black and Hispanic. Massive protests. Boys I went to high school killed and maimed. It seemed to go on forever.
