And the distinction to cinder cones is that spatter is sticky and you get these very steep sides and high height per width. Cinder cones are again made by looser material which cooled lot before falling down and doesn't really stick. And tuff cones are made by interaction with water blowing magma to very fine fragments causing very wide, low profile per width cone.

Never thought of a moss forest let alone it being on fire. Nature is wild! to say the least. Thank you for all your information. Glad you had a good time on your vacation. Have a good semester at college. Everything keeping you busy!
@tuunaes8 ай бұрын
Organic materials often have this nasty tendency to be flammable when dry. That's why making camp fire on ground containing organic materiall is risk of starting later fire after you seemingly put out that camp fire. Especially some peat can smoulder really long before igniting... Even over whole winter under snow!
@g3user1usa8 ай бұрын
I had wondered what they were talking about with wildfires. That sparse moss. I thought that stuff was random weeds. I thought it was harmless if it caught fire but I guess the people don't want any more smoke in the air than necessary. They said it was hard to reach since it was likely surrounded by rivers of lava.

Thanks Shawn! We're watching to see if the eruption will change our cruise itinerary in July. Im interested in it from a geology aspect as well.

Glad you hear had a nice vacation Prof. Willsey, great to have you back! Excellent breakdown as always. From the topo. maps of the different lava flows clearly shows the latest eruption has produced the largest amount of surface lava. By & large the man made emergency berms have largely held up very well to this point. Risk of future flows to over run these defenses due to the now raised topography was nicely pointed out & will difficult to mitigate. The current ongoing low level eruption may be contributing to the lack of ground inflation recently (with lava venting on the surface, allowing for a release of pressure from below). Still, feel for all the residents of Grindavik with such an uncertain future, best wishes to them!

22:15 having followed all the Fagradalsfjall 2021 eruption from the beginning by web cam I can confirm this is actually the spatter cone of the main vent from that eruption. That place was once a green beautiful small inner valley smoothed by glaciers called Geldingadalur. I think it's not called that way anymore since the suffix - dalir means valley in Icelandic and there is no more valley there anymore, just a big rugged lava field overflowing in different direction with this massive wide spatter cone in the center.
@David_K_Booth8 ай бұрын
That would be cognate with English -dale. It appears in the names of valleys in the North of England, where the Vikings settled and brought some Old Norse words with them.
@Steviepinhead8 ай бұрын
Also cognate with the variant English form "dell," and with German "tal" (current spelling of what used to be "thal," as in Neanderthal).
