Every time I see any part of the eruption(s) I am blown away. That a lot of lava!! Now I want to find out about some of the Icelandic folklore about volcanoes---this must have been terrifying to people who didn't know much about geology. Thanks Shawn!

I have begun watching all your geology videos ever since happening upon your Iceland coverage last December. You're an amazing teacher, Dr Willsey, and I appreciate both your expertise and your generosity with it. It's awesome, witnessing this volcanism!!!

This is incredible to view live or replay, from a world away. Thank you Shawn & NatureEye and all involved in making this possible. Ever since Mt St Helen's Eruption impacting my route from FL to NAS Whidbey, I've always been curious about volcanic activities from safety at home in Florida. I really enjoy viewing historic and active geological events. Thank you for teaching us about our planet! ❤

Watching drone flight, listening to my husband picking guitar, is both soothing and spectacular at the same time. A time ago, I walked the Niska'a lava flow near Terrace, BC. I am so glad I had this opportunity as it makes watching this living landscape amazing ❤✌️👍

Thank you so much, Shawn, for another very informative update. I really enjoyed watching your drone flights on replay: what fantastic views of the cone and the perched lava pond and lava channels, such an incredible and mesmerizing footage... You're absolutely right: this is "lava therapy" :) A Rhine river cruise with "a little bit of France"? Hmmm let's see... I guess you'll visit Strasbourg, then...? Beautiful city, you must see the magnificent gothic cathedral whose reddish-brown color comes from the sandstone of the Vosges mountains... As always, thanks to @MandieJo and Susan H. and Bruce G. for their help, and of course to Johann and NatureEye: takk!

Hi Shawn, thank you so much for linking up with Nature Eye and giving us two amazing flights over the lava flows, the crater and landscape. It was utterly mesmerising. Your update was thorough, as always. I don't usually make the live streams as I'm here in the UK but I always make time to watch them the day after. I am learning so much and falling in love with volcanoes again. I hope you enjoy your river cruise. Take care.

Thank you for illustrating the complexity of lava flows even in one eruption. On my daily beach walks I am trying to unravel the ancient volcanic activity which has shaped the east coast of Scotland where I currently live. Didn’t notice any air pollution but apparently the recent Taylor Swift concerts in nearby Edinburgh set off local seismic record!

The green house don't have any glass in it anymore another person with a drone did a close up. Also there is a outgassing fissure in side of the Grendavik protective berm. the fissures by Hagafell toe, on the first day of the eruption was erupting Lava , and was doing ash eruptions when the lava came into contact with ground water.

@@shawnwillsey ORF genetics posted this in January 2024, thry was in full operation up until November. Since November, when it became evident that our greenhouse was situated on a volcanic crack, we have been preparing for this eventuality. Everything that could be salvaged from the greenhouse has already been salvaged and no operations have been ongoing in the house since the evacuation in November. During the January eruption the green house still had power and was a beacon in the dark, after that eruption it went dark, your drone flight showed all the glass was intact, but today it looks like a bomb went off in it.

Shawn, since the lower spots of the topography have been filled in by the previous lava flows, does it make sense that (and the volume of the eruption) contribute to this being the largest eruption by area so far?

@ Shawn Willsey, for your Rhine Teavel, I may have some suggestions. I am from from Colonge. You shurely know the Rhine Graben. My Dad hat build there on the Westside a lot of buildings, He hat ever trouble with it. There are several earthquakes, 1992 a 5.9. Süuth of Colonge, on the east sie, you have the Drachenfels and 7 Mountains, the are from slate. In this Region slate is calles "ley" so you have the explanation of Loreley- a Girl names Lore on the Ley. Further south on the right side you have wine, and there is the Eifel, shortly before Koblenz is the Volcano Eifel. You know the Maare. (The interesting there is, that ants build there homes on degassing cracks) much further on the left side you will see some volcanic features. Have a nice time there❤

Couple questions: 1. What is the thickest the lava has accumulated in a single area since before the first eruption? I imagine some of the lava is a few hundred feet thick with all the overlapping eruptions. 2. If you look at the upward motion graphs, the area has inflated about 0.6 meters since before the first eruption. Is there a reason that when the magma chamber empties it doesn’t deflate all the way? Is this indicative of a larger magma body or intrusion deeper within the crust?

June 15 satellite (Sentinel, SWIR) shows no red south of the cone, with lava first going northwest, then nort and then west A big pond about 500m from the road. Wondering if the lava pond on the south side of cone ends up flowing north.

I feel like we are watching this spatter cone and its elevated lava ponding area build up like the old cones/hills might have. ❓Could it be a view into the past of Thorbjorn, Hagafel and others nearby? (Sorry if my spelling is off). I mean, specifically, a series of short in duration fissure eruptions which establish a multilayer, raised, large area of ponded lava beds. That is followed by a second stage of sequential eruptions that each last longer than the first eruptions because the below ground magma channels are widened and perhaps straightened, and therefore both cone building and lava layering can build higher elevation over years, with repeated lava ponding a necessary factor. End result is a cone that looks like a rounded mountain instead of the classic stereotype of a volcano shape. Am I stating the obvious, or is it impossible to verify? This all is new to me as a Minnesota musician, even though I’ve learned a lot from this channel. I watch as many of your current, older and class videos as I can. Enthused about geology!! Fascinating! Thanks!
