Honestly kind of surprised this sort of "humane trap with enrichment" idea isn't around in some form today - wildlife surveyors especially would likely appreciate the idea of reducing stress in the animals they're capturing to study, for one thing.

angelbloodshinra Not to mention that any animal in a live catch trap usually tries to chew through it. The wheel might just be good enough to keep them from trying

Interestingly enough, researches have found that wild mice like running on wheels that people normally give to their pet mice. They'll do it without prompting, the researchers just have to set the wheels out. Their conclusion is that some animals are wired to want to exercise, to keep fit, and wild mice have that drive. The other general type tries to conserve energy (e.g. humans).

The noise of the spinner wheel is to alert you of a catch in the middle of the night. No more forgetting to check the trap every morning.
@skoonthatraccoonskunkguy3865
@skoonthatraccoonskunkguy3865 7 жыл бұрын
Gerard Johnson yup, one of the biggest problems I have found with "human" traps is that because they get placed in out of site locations (because that's where the mice like it) you often don realize you have one until you smell the rotting remains of a small creature having dehydrated or starved to death in a small cage.

it is my understanding that mice (and gerbils etc.) run on these wheels because they are trying to "escape" or explore or something. Basically, its like they see a ladder (or somesuch) and they climb it, expecting to find the end, not realizing it for a circle.

Quite the late comment, he has his own farm and several others he does this at. Also once mice and rats start infesting it's pretty hard to eliminate them, population management is straight forward enough(trap and kill) but getting rid of them all? Sisyphean task.

that's actually a major concern for hamster/excercise wheels that still use iron bars. sometimes fur or skin even gets caught up in the gaps or the spinning portion and even become fatal injuries. most pet experts recommend solid wheels with minimal exposure to spinning parts.

What needs to be made is a mouse trap complex that has 10 traps. 5 of them are these wheel traps that store power. The last 5 traps are electrocution traps that use the stored power. As long as the electrocution traps can reset themselves by clearing off the mouse corpses; This trap could run for a few days.

You introduce the Fairy trap like it will be a pleasant diversion for the captive mouse; like Club Med, just getting in a few laps till morning . That little guy ran until it didn't get out then changed directions. It probably burned a lot of calories trying to run away. No wonder he looked tired when you got to him. Maybe it's a live trap designed to make them drop dead from exhaustion or little bitty heart attacks. All in good fun, it has been very interesting to see the wide variety of ideas to make a better mousetrap.

Jmkulit Austria Didn't actually look like it. I'm sure he did at some point, but that running is normal running for a mouse on a wheel, especially one too small for it. I own mice and looks pretty normal. When they try to escape somewhere they chew on the bars/walls more. And an additional fun fact that wild mice will run on a mouse wheel if you leave one out for them. Weird creatures.

Oh! Oh! Someone's gotta make a trap that generates electricity, like Shawn mentioned, but the power is stored in a battery, which powers a nearby electric zapping mouse trap. That way, the live trapped mouse can literally kill his buddies.

Eh, getting up at night to execute an injured, screaming rat outside isn't really my idea of a good trap. Live trap, keep them alive, well, and quiet until you can deal with them in the morning.

My first thought when I saw you set it, was like "that's going to shut with the mouse's butt and he's gonna get away ". I thought the first chamber was too short. Love the hamster wheel.

if you want to kill the mice you catch in the humane traps in a humane way i found that a really good and painless way is to put them in the microwave for 30 seconds

Some people want mice out of their house or barn or whatever, but don't want to kill them. So they catch them, take them somewhere away from their house such as a field or something, and let them go. Both problems solved: The mouse is no longer in their house, and they didn't have to kill it.

I could see this trap incorporating a bell so that as the mouse runs it alerts the user that the trap is full and the mouse needs to be released ASAP. Probably particularly good if you want humane traps, maybe in difficult to reach places, that don’t require constant checking.

A more modern version the trap's connected to a day spa where the mouse can relax and get a facial or a full body mud pack.

I would connect the power to a capacitor to jolt the mouse dead :> that way it would be beautifully ironic. The mouse gets in -> gets bored -> spins the wheel -> gets zapped to death. A death out of boredom :D PS I just read the pinned comment after i wrote mine :)

Think about the other utility behind the wheel- it makes noise, and it will alert you when a mouse has been caught when it uses it.
