This scene shows how evil Norton is. One could imagine a better man agreeing to help Andy get a retrial and regain freedom, and perhaps after they can work as equals running the same scams and laundering money as before. Andy said himself he would be just as indictable for the crimes. Instead what Norton does shows he has no interest in treating Andy as a human being, let alone a partner in crime. He basically wants a slave to run his scams and polish his boots.

In this scene, Norton gifted Andy the best gift someone in Andy's position could receive; desperation. When Andy learnt the true nature of the Warden and how far he was going to go, to prevent Andy ever from leaving Shawshank. Andy at that moment knew he was a Deadman. If he stays working under the thumb of the Warden, he'd die in Shawshank (never being allowed to leave, while he was alive) or once The Warden no longer needed Andy, he'd kill him just to tie up the loose end (just as he killed the kid to silence him). I think that's when Andy found his motivation to make his daring escape, and that he had no intention of being recaptured or taken alive. To get busy living or get busy dying.

William Burke Clancy Brown has played other villains in his career like in Bad Boys in 1983 with Sean Penn and was the evil Kurgan in Highlander in 1986 going against Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert. A deranged killer in Shoot to Kill in 1988 and was a corrupt Solider in Extreme Prejudice in 1987. He has also played good guys to in comedies like Flubber with Robin Williams

I put this up Bob Gunton's acting in this scene and the rest of the movie up there with Anthony Hopkins / Silence of the Lambs. Some of the best acting of the 90s right here in this clip. He also has the look of someone from the 1930s better than anyone in the movie with his glasses / hair cut.

This was the moment that sealed Warden Norton’s fate. Had he just let Andy stop helping with the scams, Norton could have taken what money he had and retired. Instead, he pushed Andy, threatening him. For Andy, this was the last straw. The Warden was dead, he just didn’t know it yet.

We can see how Andy looks like,he practically got crazy in the hall, and when he heard that he has to stay for another month there we can read on his face everything, more exactly that he will be like a piece of shit there, not able to think normally and even to walk 😂 i like Andy's reaction: oh shit, I'm fucked

Norton was incredibly written. A decent looking man who's also educated and preaches the word of God tasked to oversee and manage criminals. But it's only a mask on his true evil form. When first watching this movie, I seriously thought at first that Hadley would be the main antagonist here. While Hadley is brutal in his own right, it's nothing compared to Norton. Seeing Norton's true self makes Hadley look like an angel.

I’m surprised Warden Norton doesn’t appear on more Best Movie Villain lists. He’s just as evil as Darth Vader, The Joker, and Hannibal Lecter IMO. Unlike Vader, Joker, or Lecter, who often have more overt and flamboyant displays of villainy, Norton's evil is more insidious and grounded in a harsh reality that’s terrifying in its own right.
