Ruyi still loved him, wanted to be with him, but I believe she only agreed to being empress because 1. she would have better access to the emperor and 2. she knew other concubines would still try to kill her and being empress is the best way to protect herself. The BS she now has to deal with (concubine wei/ling) is ten times worse than consort Hui and Consort Jia.

Why does he need to ask permission from his evil dead empress who arranged to have his children killed. What is wrong with him. He deserves what he gets in the end. He is weak in many ways. Despite his pretense of doing things to appear strong and harming Ruyi more than anyone else. I loved watching their love, but now he just annoys me more as he is so weak that he always takes others side over hers before he can ‘investigate’ which “he “ never does, someone else has to figure it out and save her. He does love her, but it is not good enough IMHO.

Someone said that like once she died he loved her more. I think it’s like how when a bad relationship is over you made suddenly want them back cause you aren’t seeing their bad side daily anymore. If they came back you’d remember why you didn’t want them the first time. Almost as if her becoming the empress would lead to her downfall and suffering... which, if you've finished the show, is proven to be true. The story is very sad. Ultimately, love is what led to Ruyi's downfall. Hongli's (The Emperor) love was toxic and was weighed down by insecurity and Ruyi's love was faulted in that it was unconditional. So many people warned her that her love for Hongli would betray her and she dismissed those warnings and continued to love him.
