Steph, my first comment, I watch all the time. I am 77, and this may be an old way to wean calves, grew up on a dairy farm. It was my job to wean them. We put the milk replacer in a bucket, my fingers in the calf’s mouth, they will suck, lower nose into bucket and they kept sucking up the milk. Only took one or two times. They are smart and caught on quickly. They do have teeth, that can hurt a bit, never had broken skin though! You guys are doing great and have a beautiful family. Keep it up and congrats on the new house. Enjoy!

There are calf buckets with a ripple on hook it over a fence or and the calf can suck on it and get the milk. You can step back away and will not touch the calf while it is getting its milk. I am 80 years old and fed my calves .

On Friesian Horses Yvonne had to get to Yfke to drink from a bucket bc her mem (mother) didn’t have but one working udder and not enough milk at that. Yfke got familiar with this new way - which was in addition to the mem, and would run to lick up the milk. Watching her practically lick the color off the bucket when the amount changed was sweet.

I’m wondering where Dixie escaped to. If you found her with the goat that had babies, Dixie was doing her job as a guardian. Llamas are already a guard animals, but goats need the dogs.

I know it’s hard to keep the Billie’s away from the girls but it would be great if u timed it and kept them separate from the girls a few months ago yr so babies arent born in the hottest part of the summer. The newborns can’t regulate their body temp as well as older babies and adults. The heat is really rough on them. I love ur family u two r the greatest parents. And from what I heard Brandon is a fabulous cop. A real inspiration to others. The good LORD has blessed y’all with great hearts 🐾❤️🐾

Natural weaning occurs, but babies can still nurse up to a year after beginning grass and grain... If you plan on breeding momma again, you need to keep them separated...this can help plan the time of year the next baby will arrive...
