On September 3, 2022, Sarah Elissa Beechler, a 34-year old climber from Denver, Colorado, was attempting the Capitol Peak solo. It was her last 14-er of the 58 peaks in Colorado over 14,000 feet in elevation. She was incredibly skilled and experienced climber.
While traversing the route, she fell to her death about 900 feet into Pierre Lakes Basin. She fell after a rock she was trying to hold onto suddenly broke off. She was traversing the route that connects the Knife’s Edge to the Capitol Peak summit.
The Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a call just before 8 a.m. from a man who was part of a hiking party that saw the woman fall what he believed was 1,500 to 2,000 feet from below the summit. The caller was able to direct search and rescue to the exact location where Sarah fell, and her body was later recovered.
Sarah’s body was airlifted from the area after crews launched a recovery mission with 25 volunteers from Mountain Rescue Aspen, two Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputies and flight crew from Flight For Life Colorado, Montrose Helitack and EcoFlight.
This is her story.

Once again - your video posts are supremely interesting and respectful. It is a story that I've never heard of before and it's a tragedy. I'm glad you changed the music when talking about Sarah's life. You don't sensationalize the accidents, or the climbs - you simply give us the facts and you're fair to the climbers. Great job. Sad story.

Thank you for telling the story about this drama in the mountains I’ve never heard of since yet. Also the mountain is totally unknown to me. It was a very breathtaking video about the ridge the accident occurred. I never would’ve dared to climb it, but I can imagine it is a big challenge for good alpinists. It’s great of you to give us impressions of different kinds of mountains and people who like them so much. Sorry for this nature-loving woman who lost her life!

It gives one pause. Climbed it three times with no more than usual effort but a loose rock from hand or foot can do you in.

The worst part is that sometimes, even if you test the rock, it may look fine but it won't hold your full weight. There's inherent danger in mountaineering and rock climbing that just can't be fully accounted for.

Your videos are a true hidden gem.... a wonderful video about a wonderful woman. Too often the deaths of people like Sarah are either overdramatised to get clicks, or undersold as yet another reckless person throwing their life away. It's always a breath of fresh air to watch these videos that present the facts... provide context through actual photos & footage (rather than unrelated stock imagery)... and celebrate a life rather than condemning their choices. RIP Sarah 🤍

You got quite a few details wrong 😢 I was the one that called it in, witnessed it, last one to take her picture, and last one to talk to her.

It would be safer to get a guide and do a technical rock route to the summit in my opinion. You would have a rope, a helmet, an expert guide and protection keeping you on. No way would I do that ridge and I am climber with plenty of scrambling and knowledge of foot and hand placement and checking rock quality. People often think of rock climbing as an "extreme danger sport". With the right knowledge and care, it is safer to do than drive to where you are climbing, because you can control everything except random Act of God rockfall above you.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Eccl. 9:11)
