Having a few autistic grandchildren I have learned that just like, "normal" children you judge each one on what they can handle, most of my grandchildren are high functioning so taking them to a gathering, wedding etc ... would normally not be a problem. Just remember, to have backup help handy just in case. Unfortunately I have one grandchild that is very much like old shows would show autistic children. Rocking, humming to herself, when in a bad spell she will even beat her head against the wall. I love them all the same and when I am around them, I remember to talk softly, and calmly. Remember, they have feelings also. Always love them. A proud Grandmom

I would have protected my daughter the same way. My daughter is 21 years old now & she's autistic. I tell you family members can be worse towards an autistic child more than strangers. My narcissistic mother she said to me I won't ever look after your daughter I couldn't handle it. My mother also said she needs to stop yelling & screaming you need to make her stop it & you need to make her sleep properly at night time. My daughter's yelling & screaming isn't a tantrum it's out frustration & sometimes sensory overloads but my mother wasn't interested in hearing that. My narcissistic mother even said to me you just want her to be autistic so you can get $6000 for her. I said to her I don't know what you're talking about as I honestly didn't know. Then my mother said to me you're meant to get $6000 for a child under 6 years old of they are autistic I know because I googled it. I said really well if you paid a speck of attention to my daughter(your granddaughter) newsflash she's 10 years old she's not under 6 years old. That made my mother shut up. I never got any kind of money for my daughter. Even when my daughter was officially diagnosed with ASD(autism spectrum disorder) at 14 years & 6 months of age we still got no money. Now she's 21 years old we still don't get any big lump sums of money. So whatever my mother is on about she needs to go do more research. My mother is the money hungry one not me. I still only get the normal $650 one week & $145 week two. That's it. To support my daughter so where & what big lump sums of money. It's the same amount from when she was a little kid.

While I 100% agree with that the sister was wrong in not inviting her nephew because he autistic, i do have to say that depending on the level of ASD, a wedding would be overestimating for some autistic kids. All 3 of my kids are on the spectrum. While my 2 youngest at that age would have handled it fine, my youngest would have been a mess. A parent knows what their autistic child can handle, and sister should have let OP decide wheter her son would be ok at the wedding or not.

I completely agree, they could've even had some sort of civil discussion about maybe some sort of more calming accommodation. I know my husband as a grown man has issues with large crowds at times. Even at family events I'll find him kinda huddled in a corner, breathing heavy, being quiet. That's his way of telling me he needs some help, and some extra support. 🤷‍♀️
@laurabenevelli6783

I have known / know people on the spectrum. It’s a matter of knowing your child / family member. There are some people on the spectrum that can’t even handle if company comes over to their home. There are others who, with support, can go to a large wedding or event without to much of an issue as long as they know their support is there for them.

This oP is just as horrible a person as the sister She decided to go and bring her son that was not invited The boy shouldn’t have been there and then for revenge you had the child make a big spectacle to expose the sister. You had him go on stage and give her a gift You as the OP planned event performance to get back at your sister. You even went to the bachelorette party hoping to confront her. It is her wedding her decision to make, you had your wedding and did what you wanted You are the AH You are just as horrible human as your sister! How can you criticize her when you are worse None of your wishes and feelings should be considered ( and I am Not a hateful person/ I will treat all the same / I am very involved I. A child’s life who has higher end Autism. I will fight for any child to make sure they are not mistreated BUT you didn’t care about your child you wanted everyone to know your sister didn’t invite him to the wedding And had Your Son go on stage. You knew what was going to happen.

ESH, OP should’ve just refuse to go to the wedding once she ban her son. Taking Evan to give her a gift when he was banned from the party was an AH move, she deserved it? Probably, but even if she deserved it you still ruined her wedding and exposed her. OP had her revenge, but she clearly didn’t handle it in a mature way, she was petty. She should’ve reject the invitation, and when everyone wonders why she is not going the truth would’ve come out anyways.

I disagree with this story I disagree with what the op did. Yes he's her son and I will be disgusted with my sister for not inviting my child because of his issues. But that will only set a precedent for me to not go around my sister anymore I would cut her off I could care less about what her life ended up being because once you say that to me when my children are a part of my life, there is no more sister live on there's no family there's no blood there's nothing we are over with. But going in there and making a scene at someone's wedding because mind you, if it was any other reason besides her son being autistic and somebody being gay, you all would have been sitting here standing in ovation sand to this lady that is your sister's wedding, she can make calls. And that's one thing you don't realize it's not opie's wedding it's not her son's wedding it is her sisters and her sisters fiance wedding so however the decision she made and she don't want someone at her wedding she's more than welcome to have that decision but that doesn't necessarily mean that op can allow her to stay in her and her child's life.

The O.P. was right to FeeL bad about the way her sister was behaving, however, she was Very wrong for her revenge behavior. This was her sister's day and she had no right to destroy it. She placed herself before the person who was supposed to be first in this situation. There are times and places where honest discussions should take place. Before the wedding she could have had the fiance meet the family without his family around, in a low pressure environment that would be comfortable for the child with autism also. I can't imagine how he reacted when his beloved Aunt slapped a gift away that he was giving her. She used her son like a pawn for her own righteous anger. That revenge wasn't for her son, because it's a hurtful thing to do to him and children need their illusions that family is love until they can understand WHY it sometimes isn't. It's absolutely cruel for an adult to use a child to be underhanded towards another adult. This was NOT OPs moment, it was her SISTER'S! It seems the relationship lasted years before they were married with a long period between proposal and wedding. There was more than plenty of time to work it out or opt out of attending. O.P. was wrong, no matter who else was also wrong. There's zero points for O.P.s behavior. Cruel to both her sister and her son. I believe making it right us always better than being right when the end result is understanding and love. This was devisive and broke and tore through all involved leaving hurt and destruction in its wake. She made the situation worse and resolved nothing Fixed nothing For nothing Everyone lost

OP was not "protecting" her son by bringing him to the wedding. Protecting him would have been to keep him away from the situation. Instead, OP used him to be vindictive, and he deserved better than that treatment. Her sister's behavior would have come out on its own, as it always does in situations like this.
