I think they had recently released their Perspectives album, which was a good album for a band like them coming to maturity in the context of the music of the mid 80s. I liked Cinderella, Special Girl, and a few other songs from that album. They left a guitar string on the stage, and I picked it up. I meant to keep it as a souvenir, but I think I inadvertently used it to string one of my guitars. 😊

Before he was taken away to the funeral home, my mother discovered a song and played it next to him on repeat, because the words meant so much to her. It described everything going on, and how selfless of a man he was. It’s a song called “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam. It made us all cry. We were truly blessed to have him. In the mid-seventies, the great soft rock triumvirate consisted of Loggins & Messina, Seals & Crofts, and America. And I had (still have) all their albums from that period and listened to them a lot. Yes, there are still several hits that you haven't hit yet: Sandman; I Need You; Don't Cross the River; Only In Your Heart; Lonely People; Daisy Jane; Muskrat Love (never ever listen to the Captain & Tenille version of that song - they emasculated it), but their catalogue is deep and full of brilliant songs. My favorite album of theirs is their third, Hat Trick. They'd been compared to other bands and singers so much at the beginning of their career, they were determined to make some music that was incomparable. I think they succeded. There's a pair of songs that I think you should listen to back to back since they run together on the album. They are Molten Love (a pretty love song with a dancing melody) and Green Monkey (a little rocker with some guitar work provided by Joe Walsh.) First, a song for Amber, then a song for Jay. Love you guys. Thanks for giving an old man some fun...

I was just thinking that if Amber's into mellow 70s rock groups like America, she'd love a band called Poco. "Crazy Love" would be a good introductory song-- pretty sure it was their biggest hit. Poco is an interesting group-- it was formed by former members of Buffalo Springfield and members of the band later went on to form Loggins & Messina and the Eagles. In fact, there's kind of a funny story about Poco and the Eagles-- when Randy Eisner left Poco to form the Eagles, Poco hired Timothy B. Schmidt as his replacement because nobody else could hit the insane high notes that Eisner sung in some of Poco's earliest hits; then, when Eisner left the Eagles in 1977, the Eagles poached Timothy B. Schmidt from Poco as Meisner's replacement because nobody else could hit the insane high notes that Eisner sung in some of the Eagles' earliest hits.

They actually played at, if I remember correctly, the debut of Pendleton Whisky at the Happy Canyon arena at the Pendleton Round Up stadium, in Pendleton, OR. Now you probably have all those connects made. Why they chose America, I don't know, but they were amazing. They sounded almost exactly like their earlier work and they looked like they hadn't aged even. I was amazed. Concert was great, whisky is one of my favorites.
