But then the writers swerve away from that and slander her for the sake of their god-awful plot.

Its definitely a double standard. I think its because Toms family both come from royalty and inherited the rule of the underworld which is his moms domain. The underworld is rather isolated and seems to have a bigger monster population. The hypocrisy comes from the fact that Eclipsa is queen of Mewni which is way more discriminatory and the fact that she married nonroyatly - a monster with no status.
