The story of 'Rechenka' ... it's from an old traditional folk tale about an orphaned girl who is supposed to marry someone she doesn't love, so she goes down to the river (the border between the living and the dead) to talk to her mother and ask for her advice. That strange, rough, whispery voice is her mother asking why she's not smiling; the rest of it is her telling her sad story. I think the crying-yodel is particularly powerful.

But she got her revenge the following year and year thereafter by winning not only the Russian contests in two consecutive years but 60 more awards and contests. Please ( when you get the chance) I BEG of you to at least privately react by YouTubing “ Diana Ankudinova yodeling”. And you’ll witness a yodeling masterpiece and if you stay to near the end of the judges commentary ( making excuses and lying) you will hear a brief portion of the French song the judges asked her to sing that she NAILED! And there is a video of her outside a mall at age 11 singing this same French song but the complete version and she KILLED IT!!!! And when you’re convinced that she’s one of the best female vocalist in the world ( like millions of others including myself) you may want to react to a couple of her newer songs: ( she just turned 17 the other day) like “by your voice”.
